May 2, 2014 2:49 PM in response to turingtest2by protect02476,Hi tt2,
I disabled UAC howver, Windows still asks to confirm each deletion. Also, the progress bar you speak of never appeared with UAC disabled. Is there a value in the script that can automate answering "ok" to each confirmation request?

May 2, 2014 3:00 PM in response to protect02476by turingtest2,Can you confirm which build of Windows you are running, and is there any chance of a screenshot of the confirmation prompt? What happens if you delete a file from the NAS using Windows Explorer? Do you get the same prompt?
I've been meaning to write an option to move the unwanted files to a new subfolder rather than deleting them directly not least because on a NAS there is no active recycle bin to recover from if there is a problem.

Turns out Windows 8 has complicated the picture. Disabling UAC under Windows 8 leaves another setting, called LUA, enabled. This is what prevents the progress bar from operating. Disabling LUA breaks Metro Apps so it may not be desirable, but I've added EnableLUA to the scripts collection which displays the current setting and optionally changes it if wanted.

May 4, 2014 3:51 AM in response to turingtest2by protect02476,Hi tt2,
Using Windows 8.1 Pro
The same delete confirmation appears when deleting files on the NAS via Windows Explorer.
Here are the two DeDuper screens - not the screenshots I was hoping for:
First: I select "Yes"
---------------------------
DeDuper
---------------------------
Scan selected tracks/current playlist for duplicates and optionallyremove them.
Plays & skips will be merged, most recent played/skipped dates will be
used, and the track that is preserved will be added to any playlists
that the removed tracks were in.
It should help to reduce the overall execution time if you use the
iTunes feature to ''Show Exact Duplicates'' and select the displayed
tracks before running the script.
WARNING!
Are you sure you want to process 67706 tracks?
Yes : Process tracks automatically
No : Preview & confirm each action
Cancel : Abort script
NB: Disable User Access Control to allow progress bar to operate
or change the declaration ''Prog=True'' to ''Prog=False'' to hide this message.
---------------------------
Yes No Cancel
---------------------------Second: I have selected both "Yes" & "No"
---------------------------
DeDuper
---------------------------
There were 44741 duplicates found from 67706 items:43941 physical (multiple copies of file with identical properties & size)
800 alternate (multiple formats/bitrates with identical properties)
leaving
22965 original (unique files after deduping)
Would you like to delete the duplicates?
Yes : Delete all duplicate tracks automatically
No : Delete all but alternate dupes (safer)
Cancel : Abort script
---------------------------
Yes No Cancel
---------------------------I receive now other notifications.
Thanks, p

This is the key... You need to change whichever option in Windows Explorer is resposible for generating this confirmation. Try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-delete-confirmation-dialog- in-windows-vista/
Alternatively I'll work on that "move rather than delete" option...

May 4, 2014 5:49 AM in response to turingtest2by protect02476,I don't know if Windows 8 does it by default but the recycle bin box was already unchecked.
Okay so here's the thing, with the recycle bin box unchecked when deleting files ON my laptop via Windows Explorer, I dont get a delet confirmation alert but do when the file is on the NAS. This is a Synology NAS, if that means anything to you.

May 4, 2014 5:46 AM in response to protect02476by turingtest2,I don't think the brand makes a difference. I'm sure it is possible to prevent that pop-up but off-hand I can't recall what incantation to offer Google in order for it to provide the answer... RealLife(TM) is calling on my time right now but I'll try to get a tweak to the script done at some point today...

May 4, 2014 6:48 AM in response to turingtest2by Faux-Pas,Weird! ever since I consolidated (thank you for your help, again, you're my hero), it won't let me dedupe!
(newest iTunes, newest Deduper, Windows 8.1) -
keeps giving me the info "There was a problem deleting the file ..." within the iTunes Media folder, ending with a 1 or 2, thus an exact duplicate. the script works fine, only the deleting part is somehow not working. will go back and read the 18 pages I missed since last time, maybe you've already answered that question.

May 4, 2014 8:50 AM in response to turingtest2by protect02476,I'm not sure if this will help but when I receive the first delete confirmation and answer "No", this message appears and the script stops:

Line: 518
Char: 9
Error: 0x80270000

May 4, 2014 10:31 AM in response to turingtest2by Chris1955,Thanks for your script. It helped me get out of the mess I had created. You are a genius ! Is there a similar script or Program that works in Mac ?

May 4, 2014 6:53 PM in response to protect02476by turingtest2,I haven't managed to get the archiving routine working yet, but something clicked while I was thinking about the problem. I've a feeling I solved it before for someone else by changing the way the file is deleted. The attempt to delete files into the recycle bin essentially emulates deleting a file via Windows Explorer, but it we're not interested in saving them then a straight file system delete command should go through unchallenged. I've added a new control variable UseTrash which is currently set to true so that most users get the protection that it provides. Download a fresh copy of the script and change the line (currently line 137) that reads:
UseTrash=True ' Attempt to send local deleted files to trash
to
UseTrash=False ' Attempt to send local deleted files to trash
Then save the edited script and run that... Usual caveats about having a backup and testing on a small group first.

What happens if you try to delete the same file yourself via Windows Explorer? It might be a permissions issue. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows for details.
Otherwise you could try the non-recycling option as described above to see if that works without error.

Try Dupin or Dupin Lite from Doug's Scripts.

May 9, 2014 2:31 PM in response to turingtest2by protect02476,DeDuper took forever (days) because of the massive number of duplicates I had, but it worked like a charm - still no progress bar but not complaining. Thanks for your time, expertise and the new control variable! It's people like you who share their talent on the net that makes the lives of people like me a little easier.
I owe you a beer but it may have to be a virtual one.
Take care!
