May 9, 2014 1:10 PM in response to Reenskeeby benwiggy,There are many threads on this subject, and nearly all are the result of some incompatible third-party software that cuases problems in Mavericks.
If you follow the instructions in this post:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6171
and then post the results here, someone may be able to help.

May 9, 2014 1:11 PM in response to Reenskeeby MichelPM,It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.
If you so choose, please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic reporting tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.
Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.
This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.
Thank You.

May 9, 2014 1:53 PM in response to Reenskeeby MichelPM,Your Mac is starved for RAM.
Your year and model iMac can take up to 8 GBs of RAM.
OS X Mavericks needs a real world "working" minimum RAM of 4 GBs. More RAM is always better.
If you can adford it, install the full 8 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
You need to make sure to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied.
You may need to go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins and extensions, also.
Also, if you have any connected third party devices, like non- Apple keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card readers, audio/video device, etc, you need to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions by going to each device makers' websites and search for, download and install any device driver/software updates.
Good Luck!

May 10, 2014 12:19 AM in response to Reenskeeby Lexiepex,1. Is it slow also when you disconnect all USB?
2. In SysremPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove all entries, with the minus sign underneath; This does not uninstall anything just make all software in there not to run at restart.
Restart the mac.
Is it still the same?
