Q: aperture not saving projects

Just recently I am having trouble creating projects in Aperture.  Typically I would import photos right into a new project.  While it appears to do so, the project is no where to be found.

Even if I just go to "Photos" and pick out the photos I want to put into a project, using New Project and then choosing the option to Move Selection into Project - that doesn't work.  While the photos are still visible under Photos - I can't find the project, even searching for the name.

So I'm guessing that Aperture must have some kind of indexing system that has a blown index.  However I don't see anywhere to reindex it.

Please advise,

thanks,

don

Select one of the images  that are in a project you can;t find, right click it an select Show in Porject

This will show you the project the image is in. As all images have to be in a project if you see an image in the Photos section of Aperture there is a project it is in somewhere.

    Frank,

Yes.  I know about Show In Project.  Well, what if I told you on the new photos it does nothing!  On photos that I have created a project on in the past, it works.  So the theory that if the pictures are in Photos they have to be in a project does not hold true, at least in my case.

I just tried it again.  I went to import new photos from an SD card.  I choose the photos, then name the project to place them in (Import Screen - top right corner) and then ostensibly imported the photos.  Then I searched for the project and it was no where to be found.  I don't even see the photos under Photos either.

I've been using Aperture since version 2, which is probably 5 years now.  This is totally abnormal behavior for Aperture.  Something is wrong.

Is there anything else I can try?

    Don

    Have you repaired your Library?

Details are on Apple's Aperture trouble-shooting page.

It indicates that either your Library is not working correctly, or your UI is not set up to show you what you expect.

It's not a theory.  It is how Aperture works.  It appears Aperture is not working correctly for you, but we don't really have enough information to conlude that yet.

How are you searching for the Projects?

Create a new, empty Aperture library "File > Switch to LIbrary > Other/New". Then try again to import.

This will tell us, if your current Aperture library has an issue, or if you are having a more general problem.

Then I searched for the project and it was no where to be found.  I don't even see the photos under Photos either.

Also check the settings in the Import panel, if you excluded file types from being imported.

Check, if any of these options are enabled:

Well, we are getting somewhere in diagnosing the problem at least.  Everything works as expect in a New Library.

I know about and use the Do Not Import Duplicates.  That is NOT the issue.  These are not duplicate images.  Plus, once you select that, any duplicates are removed from the screen as possible photos to import.  That's not the issue.

So we know it's the specific library.

I use Final Cut a lot too and it read this library.  Though it takes about 10 minutes to absorb it as this library has about 20k photos now.  Perhaps between the two programs an index was coorupted.

How do we fix it now that we know it's the specific Library?

    Thanks,

    don

Just to be clear, Don, I meant the settings in the "File Types" brick. If the "File Types" brick is hidden, but "Exclude photos" checked, you will not notice it in the import panel, that photos are excluded from the import.

How do we fix it now that we know it's the specific Library?

Try the Aperture library First Aid Tools:

Launch Aperture while holding down the key combination option-command ⌥⌘ and continue to hold down the keys firmly, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel.  Select "Repair database" from the panel and let the repair run. That may take a very long time, sometimes hours for a large database, without any apparent progress, so let it run.

If repairing does not suffice, back up your Aperture library and try "Rebuild Library".

Create a smart album in the affected library and set it like this

In addition to the above look at the Project Path for the images that seem to be missing the project.

In the Info tab of the Inspector select edit from the pulldown. Under one of the Views (doesn;t matter which one, General will work OK ) add Aperture->Project Path and Aperture->Project Name
