So I ended up leaving my laptop next to the router. It has been a complete pain and I hope I don't have to experience that again.

If your wireless connection is that bad use a cable to connect instead.

    Csound1,

If you look at the hotmail site you are able to create an outlook alias, before setting up that alias, I receive mail intermittantly, after setting up the oulootk alias, my mail works fine.

Please feel to correct me wherever you like, but the bottom line is the action has resolved my issue.

    Best Regards,

    Alan Briggs

    Yes, I know that.

But you don't have to, all MS accounts that use the live server or the outlook server can be setup as an Imap account.

Microsoft have the info, I posted it under this:

Hotmail supports access via IMAP, POP3 and SMTP protocols. Below you can find the configuration settings for those protocols.

All Hotmail servers (POP3 and SMTP) use implicit SSL (use ConnectSSL method).
SMTP server supports explicit SSL (you can use Connect method and then secure the channel using StartTLS method)

    IMAP

    Server: imap-mail.outlook.com
    SSL: true-implicit
    Port: 993 (default)
    User: pat@hotmail.com

is it possible to set up hotmail as a pop3 account (how I used to have it) instead of an IMAP? I don't know what changed recently, but hotmail suddenly stopped sending my emails through Mac mail....outgoing server issues. I had to delete the account, and set it up again, but now it gave me no choice for a POP3 or IMAP.

Yes, just use the old settings, and set it up manually.

You should note that Hotmail POP accounts and Hotmail Imap accounts use the same outgoing (SMTP) server.

I didn't realize this was for Mavricks...I'm running Lion, Mac Mail 5.3. I don't see any way to manually set up a mail account, old settings are gone as I deleted the account. I'm wondering if I can just make a new pop3 account with one of my existing cox.net accounts and then just change the user, password, incoming & outgoing server settings to get it back to a pop3 account

The only way to set up the hotmail account is with IMAP, there is no manual option to change it to POP3 during set up. When I go into the account settings for the hotmail account, it says it's an IMAP account, and there is no way to change it to POP3. I thought if I made a dummy duplicate of one of my cox.net accounts, and then changed all the info to the hotmail settings that I could use the hotmail account as a pop3 but I don't think that will work either as all my cox.net accounts are just pop, and not pop3. Sorry, it's just hard to explain in text!

Basically when I choose "new mail account" my name is already filled in, and my hotmail email address is already filled in. If I click on cntinue, it automatically sets it up as an IMAP account, and there are no options to change it to anything else. Nor do I see any way to change that once the account is set up. I can change the server setting, but it still says "Hotmail IMAP" account like in the screenshot below. Now if I go in and change the server settings to POP3 will it change where it says hotmail IMAP account to POP3?

    That's incorrct.

Use Other as the account type and enter the POP settings manually.

exactly, except there is no "other" option in Lion that I can find. This is the only wat I have found to add an account. If I enter my hotmail info, it automatically enters it as an IMAP account, there is no option to choose other. If I am missing it, I am more than happy to be wrong. Please tell me where I can find the "other" option

mail has a habit of remembering how hotmail was configured last time. Several people including myself use the trick of entering the email address and password, but add a couple of xxx at the beginning of the address. That will fail the first test and will offer you the manual setup. Enter the correct data whilst correcting the address.

Should not be necessary, but unless you want to find all the plists etc associated with the address it is a quick option.

OK, if you had said to go into system prefs>mail contacts & calenders I would have done that to begin with. I have always made new acounts through the mail app it's self. Thanks

I assumed that you were doing it correctly previously but could not find it. (other)

This is where Mail (and other accounts) are entered, not in Mail.
