Q: Home sharing on iDevices not loading large library

I store my entire music library (3TB of ALAC files) on a Mac Mini connected to my Time Capsule. I can home share the library flawlessly on my laptop, but it absolutely refuses to load the library on my iPhone or iPad. I'm using all the latest software (iOS7, iTunes 11.1) with an iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

When I try to share my library, the circle starts to load, but never gets past halfway. I've tried EVERYTHING, i.e. signing out of home sharing and quitting iTunes, restarting the Mac Mini, restarting the iPhone, unplugging the Time Capsule and plugging it back in, and several other tips I've found around here and elsewhere online, but nothing seems to work!

I have other apps (such as Audiotap) that will do the trick, but they leave a gap between tracks, so I would prefer to get home sharing working properly. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Same issue (two libraries: Apple Lossless @ 1.25 tbs; and 320 MP3's @ .75tbs).

Neither library will load much past the half circle mark.

I changed names and provided more memory for storage on my iPad - Nothing.

I very much want to control my content by using Siri to stream music to my stereo.

The only way is to use an older device, which means you will be unable to use Siri.  I now use an iPad 1st generation, which cannot be upgraded beyond 5.1.1 and it works flawlessly with iTunes running on a Mac Mini, with a 4TB library.

Well, not quite flawlessly.  I stream music over Bluetooth to a HK BTA10 to my stereo amp and sometimes, the bluetooth drops out.  This requires me to turn Bluetooth off and back on again, after which it works.

Nevertheless, regarding the topic under discussion here, the only fix that I have found so far, is not to use any iOS devices running anything newer than iOS 5.x.

Can't be true! I have the latest, the greatest and I spent money $$$$$$$$$ !!!!!

Took out a First Generation iPad 64. Loaded the MP3 Library without objection and it works flawlessly (so far).

    Ereshkigal is correct!

Question:  Home Sharing on iDevices not Loading Large Libriary

    Answer:

    Step One: Put your latest and greatest away;

    Step Two: Buy a First Gen iPad on eBay;

    Step Three: Load Files; and

    Step Four: Play Music.

    Not Right!

    Dear tollgater:

I have iOS 7.1.1 installed and I can only get to 10 o'clock on the loading clock.

At the same time, my first gen iPad loads and plays.

Apple really dropped the ball on Mavericks.

Never thought I would say this, but I will give Android a look-see at upgrade time.

Taking about 10 minutes to load the library - each time it actually finishes... when it actually finishes.

    totally unusable.

    Bad Apple!  Bad!

For those with XCode or any other ability to see your console logs on your device, are you seeing these errors too when you try to sync your shared library?

I've been experiencing this problem too, and it's very frustrating. Really hoping Apple sees how many people want this fixed and it gets resolved Soon!

Sadly, when I have spoken with AppleCare, some of the representatives have admitted that they, too, had the same problems at home. Think about that: These are the tech experts, and they cannot resolve this problem on their own systems, but are put in the uncomfortable position of trying to placate/stall customers. It's crazy, because many of the people living in the Apple Ecosystem got there initially because of the iPod and iTunes. For those thinking of switching, I have tried the other options, and in my opinion, none are as elegant as iTunes. However, loading it to a mobile device remains a challenge.

In the meantime, I have loaded my library by folders onto my host drive and access them through an app called "MoliPlayer." It is not as refined as iTunes, but it works great for when I just want to listen to my favorites through my headphones in the bedroom.

OS 7.1.1 on gen 3 iPad took 12 minutes to load today. I have a 538GB library. Mind you, my device(s) only has to upload the library file, not the 538GB of course. Conversely, my gen3 AppleTV loaded my library in just a few seconds.

If you muscle through the 10-20 minute load time (don't let your device go into sleep mode while loading the library!), it definitely helps if you don't completely close the video app on your device. The device (iPad, phone, etc.) does a fairly good job of rembering the network and library and going straight to videos and songs after hours of idle time, even when switching access points. Even if I sleep my computer, shut down all my devices, everything works well when woken up. However, if you do a hard reset on any device, computer and/or iTunes included, you risk severing the connection. If you fully close the video app on your device, you'll have to reload the library, which will take at least 10 minutes again.

Funny, I guess one has to work with he/she has been given. Test the fences.

I'm having the same issue. Running iOS on iphone 5 when I try to connect to my shared library the loading circle only gets to about 3/4 of the way through then stops. I've tried restarting both iTunes and my iPhone(killing all running apps). I've logged out and back into my account on both my iMac and iPhone....no change. My XML file is only 58MB, I have about 26K songs.

Apple has displayed no interest in fixing the 25K iTunes Match limit fiasco so I can only assume that they will ignore this as well. I dropped iTunes Match because of the horrible way in which they manage collections that exceed their limit. I would gladly pay more for iTunes Match if it would accomodate my collection or pay the current price if it allowed for some means of managing which tunes get matched, but Apple does not provide a fix either way. I can only assume that it is part of some deal they made with satan, I mean the music industry, in order to secure the rights for iTunes Radio.

The least they could do is give some sort of feedback to users when they attempt to access large collections and say "you're screwed and we don't care". It would save a lot of time and frustration in trying to find a solution online that doesn't seem to exist.

Exactly, bablemem. I would prefer an honest, "That's screwed up and we don't want to invest the resources to fix it" to Apple Care attempting to deflect case after case by pretending it is "something" the user is doing wrong. I also agree with your complaint against iTunes Match. I know plenty of people who would pay twice the price if only they could put their whole library on without having to play some shenanigans with two iTunes accounts. I thought Apple was supposed to listen to the customer, make life easier, and all the jazz? iTunes was a great step forward, but the inability to use iTunes on our iPhones and iPads has taken all the joy out of it.

I have the same problem with Home sharing on all my idevices, including the latest iPad Air.  I tried Audiotap and it is very nearly what I need.  Unfortunately it has not been updated in a while and Airplay does not work in iOs7.  Ironically it does on my old iPad 1 which is stuck on iOS5.

I have chosen to use PLEX. It loads my huge iTunes Library of Music, Movies and TV Programmes onto my iPad Air in a few seconds and playback is flawless. This iOS Music - iTunes XML database parsing bug is embarassingly inexcusable when other, non-Apple, iOS devs can make it work effortlessly. It seems cynical but I think Apple just want us all to subscribe to Music Match with a "to hellll" attitude toward customers who don't want to pay over and over to play music they have already paid for.

@Neal Jackson: "I have chosen to use PLEX. It loads my huge iTunes Library of Music"

Plex is great for movies. I don't find Plex to be the best solution to the large music library problem. In my opinion Plex works, but just.

If you know how to create a static address (if I can do it anyone can), I would suggest using the App, iSub ($5) and Subsonic ("Donation" $20-$30) as your server.

I can also suggest the App, ServeToMe - StreamToMe ($5ish). Setup correctly, ServeToMe will capture and play your iTunes Playlists.
