Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

Sadly, it's not just automatic behavior that started with Tiger. If I am not mistaken, the behavior of opening windows in a new window has been around since the original Macintosh, and even the LISA that preceded the Mac!

And yes, that means it worked that way (I believe) in the Macintosh File System (MFS), the Hierarchical File System (HFS), and everything since.

The point is that for decades this communication between human and machine has been natural, intuitive, and reinforced by practice for decades. Apple changed it seemingly for no reason. Perhaps it's to mimic the behavior of an iPad or an iPhone (I don't know, since I own neither).

Worse than that, the new process actually makes us work harder! Pre-Mavericks, we were able to choose with keyboard selections whether to open windows in a new window or replace the window with the new window. There were times when I did both, although the latter most frequently. Now, I am forced to use only one method, which has me working harder.

The Macintosh became dysfunctional in yet another way. Yes, it reminds me of what Microsoft would do with Windows, like remove the Start button.

    Just a little FYI:

I finally got Helgason's cool EasySIMBL TheLostFinderNewWindow to work.  As far as I could tell, I had it installed correctly and even turned-on, but I wasn't having any luck and eventually just gave up and assumed I'd have to follow Apple's Brown-Shirted, Mandatory IOS Interface Dictates...

A couple of days ago, just on a Lark, I went to Helgason's original post here with his D/L page, and re-downloaded it, thinking it might possibly have been Updated.  It had the same Version Number but I dropped it into EasySIMBL and EasySIMBL asked if I wanted to replace it - I said Yes and rebooted, and now everything works completely groovy!

I was starting to get used to the Window-In-Window Neo Apple Authoritarian Mandates, and now (at least for the time being), I don't have to - Now I need to get used to using my Windows the way I've always done it and liked.  Ah, the crushing Irony.

PS:  What can I say - I'm a curmudgeon - I'm still annoyed that Apple dropped the Windowshade function from OS9... sigh.

Agh, Apple, why do you keep removing UI features & options?!?  How does this make things better?!?

Scroll bar arrows...now I can't default double-click to mean "open folder in new window"!  Argh!

I'm having another issue: I resized a window and now all windows are that size. How do I reset the window size to defaults?

The vandals at Cupertino fiddle aimlessly with the finder and with other elements of the Macintosh computer’s operating system while the Apple empire’s credentials burn.

Alas, if you don't open in a new window, all windows you open become the size of the one you started from.   If you revert to old style windows without the task bar to recover double click window opening, then everything stays the side you had it.  Also, if you keep the new style window and open up with the option button command, it will come up the size you had it.

I already reported that **** behavior using Apple's Feedback Utility in the OS X Beta Seed Program.

I suppose you're answering on my question? Sorry, but I don't fully understand your explanation.

    BAD NEWS again...

Apple still did not fix this terrible bug in 10.9.3...

Should not be too difficult... It has been there for 30 years, until mavericks destroyed it...

Will resubmit a bug-report right away!

To be an Apple Lover you must forgive them for  occassionally dropping the ball.

I have been an Apple user for 20 years (I think)

    This one drives me nuts.

Can't believe they did this. Makes no sense. They got it wrong.

Yes, I would like to click a button and have all my window to go tab browser formation after I make a mess of the desktop with millions of separately opened windows, but I don't want to be not have separate windows, or have to do a mouse and keyboard operation to open a new window in it's own pane.

I hate when designer's put form over function.

To The Designer Gods at Apple:

The new Mavericks default behavior, where double-click opens in the same folder window, obscuring the previous window, seems suspiciously like the single-window worldview of certain tablet and phone hardware also made by Apple, where you only get to look at one thing at a time. (Or Windows 8). Two folder windows open? Oooh, clutter.  It feels like we are on a slippery slope to iOS, or back to DOS, actually.

There may be tasks suitable for one-window-at-a-time (and demographic subsets who think that way). However, many of us need to be able to see, compare, correlate, copy, assimilate, content from multiple windows/sources at one time, including multiple folders.

Just think. If I practice really hard, I might be able to do Right-Click - Open In New Window as fast as a Really Slow DoubleClick.

Helgason, does your plugin: EasySIMBL (TheLostFinderNewWindow) work on Mavericks OS X10.9.3 (three)? It doesn't seem to have any effect on my MacPro (2008)

    Thanks, maxwideman@shaw.ca

It works in OS X 10.9.3 on my iMac. It doesn't work straight away, you need to restart your computer (actually shut down and restart, not just log out).

I recently had to reinstall Mavericks. I tried living without the plugin to see if I could get used to the window issue, but I didn’t get used to it, it remained a constant irritation. After 10 days I reinstalled the plugin - what a relief!
