Q: Mavericks and Outlook - repeated download of same emails

Since my Mavericks upgrade my outlook 2011 download duplicate emails that have already been received.  I rebuilt my identity database and it did not help.  I am on Outlook 14.3.8 (Outlook 2011).  Does anyone know how to either fix this issue permanently or roll back the Mavericks upgrade?

    slfnyc -

The only thing that worked for me was checking "prevent app nap" box in the "Get Info" window for Outlook.

Originally, we tried various schemes of checking and unchecking things in the System Preferences "Internet Accounts" pane, but that did not fix things, or only fixed them on a temporary basis. I wouldn't worry about the settings in the "Internet Accounts" pane. If you are getting connection error messages in addition to the duplicates, it has been the checking of the "prevent app nap" box that has most often fixed things. This seems to be especially true if you have just installed Mavericks, as you mention.

You might want to go back and check the "Get Info" window box for Outlook to be certain the "prevent app nap" box is still checked. As I recall, when I first checked the "prevent app nap," it didn't "stick" the first time. Personally, I do an immediate restart after I make a change like this.

I do not see any of this "Dupe Messages" under Rules, or anywhere else, either. Further, I don't see that oval "button" that Microsoft shows. Strange. So, poster Bioflyer isn't imagining things.

Are you using IMAP or POP?

IMAP.  I like the the guitar - I've got a flame top burst CS 336.  I can't explain why you and Bioflyer have a different view in Outlook - very frustrating for many.  You might want call Microsoft's Support Line - I'm amazed they haven't addressed the problem.

    Good luck...

Oops!  The iPad I responded with is IMAP - the MacBook is POP - sorry for the confusion.

Yes, the difference in the Outlook UI is odd indeed! I'm not so worried about it, as everything has been working correctly for some time now. My thought was that perhaps (if you were using IMAP), that might explain the missing "dupes" rule. Guess not.

I like that guitar, also. I have an old '67 335 that looks nearly identical, other than the icon has a stop tailpiece and mine has the old trapeze. Those 336s are nice.

I must be either using a different Outlook for Mac 2011 or just in a different universe.  I've tried every fix recommended in this discussion, can't find any "dupe" rule, checked the "prevent app nap" box in the app info.  Nothing works - still constant duplicate downloading, constant errors connecting, time outs, etc.  I called Microsoft tech support, but they just wished me luck and sent me on my way.  When I asked if they had plans to fix this, they laughed and said "for Mac?  Doubtful".  So much for "support".

So I continue to empty my web-based Inbox and spam mailbox, which also gets downloaded every time Outlook syncs.  Exhausting!

I had a spectacular '93 Custom Shop 335 that had a finish called Autumn Burst, with a clear tinted pick guard that was the same color as the body - it looked similar to a Honey Burst color.  The weird thing is that the smaller-bodied CS 336 sounds warmer and more woody than any of the 335's I've owned - it may be due to the solid, carved top. I like the light weight and ability to play it sitting down.

    Take care...

I had the exact same issue with Outlook 2011. I changed all my devices to IMAP my iPhone, iPad, Nexus7 and Mac Book Air. I made the change in January and I have not had a duplicate download since the change. It is a little work up front but much less work than deleting duplicate emails every other day.

    Bioflyer -

Just wondering ...have you checked to be certain the "prevent app nap" box is selected? When I first did this move, Outlook (or something) kept changing it back. As I recall, it took three or four times before it "stuck." Of course, this could have just been something unique to my machine.

I checked, the "prevent app nap" box is still selected.

    Terry,

I also had the connection time out issue and it has been almost 24 hours and the "check Prevent App Nap" fix seems to work!  Thank you!!!

Duplicate emails are an issue with POP accounts. POP was meant to be downloaded then deleted from the server, but many users select to "leave on server". Each message has an ID assigned on the server. When Outlook downloads it checks the IDs to see what it has and what needs to be downloaded.

    • If a server updates their software or reboots the server, all messages left on the server is given a new ID. When Outlook checks it sees all new IDs and download all the messages left on the server.

    • If Outlook get corrupted it can loose IDs and download again.

Your best option is to move to IMAP if possible.

If you want to save older messages on the server, in your browser, move the messages out of the Inbox to a folder you create. Email clients only download Inbox messages for POP accounts. If you ever need to download again, you move the messages back to the Inbox.

You can download this script to remove duplicates.

    http://www.scriptsformac.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Remove_Duplicates_v2.1.z ip

    • To install, click on the Script icon (squiggly S to the right of Help) and select  "About this menu".
    • Click on the Open Folder button to open the Script Menu Items folder in Application Support.
    • Put the script in this folder.
    • Select the script from the Menu bar to run.

Best run on fewer than 1000 messages per folder.

Once backed up i used the software clean my mac to clean all traces of microsoft office and any database files it finds.

Do not use Clean My Mac, MacKeeper or other similar apps! They can leave your Mac in an unmanagle state. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.

See the steps here is you need to remove Office.

    in an unmanagle state

That should be unmanageable state but managled is also an apt description.

    Hi All,

The issue of tons of duplicate emails (on my computer) was resolved using JoFr123s advice:

    Hello,

I have duplicate emails in Outlook since Mavericks install. Exiting the sleep mode (or exiting the screensaver) I found many time-out errors and Outlook re-downloaded every mails stored on the server.

    I found a solution:

1 - Display information of "Microsoft Outlook.app" (located into the folder Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Outlook.app. (Select the Microsoft Outlook.app "file" into the Finder and press Command+i) <-- that is the letter 'i'

2 - Check the box Disable/Prevent App Nap

Because I am not sure that Office 2011 manages App Nap, I disabled App Nap also for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

I completed these steps; disabling App Nap on Word, Excel and Powerpoint as well.  This resolved the issue entirely thank you so much! I am on a 2009 MacBook Pro using Yosemite (yes, this issue hasn't resolved with the advance of Mac OS).
