Q: Deleted Song Keeps Reappearing!

Hi all

I downloaded a track onto my iPhone whilst out and about via iTunes.  I now want to remove the song, but it's proving to be ridiculously tedious.

In iTunes I see the song in my music library, so I highlight it, CMD Del and remove the file.  When I click on my iPhone in the menu, I go into music and I see the track in manually added songs at the bottom - I remove it from there.  I go into Purchased on the left hand side - I delete it from there.

My songs are 'Sync only checked songs' and the song doesn't appear in any of the other lists, so it's not checked.  At this point, there should be no trace of this track on my mac.

As soon as I sync it though to get the song off my phone library, iTunes puts it back in to the library and it wont leave my phone, I just cannot get rid of it!

Does anybody know where I am going wrong?!

Thanks

PS:  I am running the latest version of iTunes, iPhone 4 on iOS 5.

Um, who wants to delete their music from their computer just to remove it from the phone?  Thats pretty dumb, obviously you are not in a place where you need to keep your songs, some of us professionals need our songs. And even if I wasn't you shouldn't have to do all that to get a song off the phone.  It should be a lot easier then it is. Itunes is ok but they really need to make it more simple/user friendly.  There shouldn't even be an option to erase your library on your computer.  Crazy

You mean you've never purchased an album on Itunes where you really didn't like one or more of the songs? And if you did dislike a song and Apple said you had to keep it and listen to it anyway every time you used shuffle songs, you meekly acquiesced? Wow.

Um, hmm first off thats not what was said, the first post said he wanted a song off his ipad/phone or whatever, and u told him to completly delete it, what if he wants it back later? Also as far as far as ur shuffle issue you can uncheck the songs that you dont want to be played or make a playlist. I never delete music even if i dont like it, you never know when u might wanna take a sample from the track later on. And ur last sentence, well i dont even know what that means.

Dont know if this will work for everybody. I have been having the same problem since I deleted a handful of songs last night. Once I did a software update some did not show up on my iPhone. The rest were still showing up and it was driving me half crazy! What I just did was go into my iPhone sync settings under music and select all the artists I wanted transfered to my phone and I synced it. Then I went back and selected to sync my whole library and the songs I deleted did not get transfered over to my phone. As I said, I am not sure this will work for everyone, you can try though.

Go to Settings, music and unselect show all music and you will be able to swipe and delete the unwanted music from your phone.

    Dear BngBngShootShoot,

This exactly describes my situation, i.e iPhone & then iTunes on a laptop PC.  And I agree with you on your assessment that Apple fixes problems on Apple to Apple problems but rarely gets to all the bugs we report about iTunes on a PC platform

FYI, I had tried putting the songs/albums that kept reappearing on my iPhone, and then deleting them again and unchecking the artist and title on the SUMMARY/MUSIC sections related to my iPhone specifically, and of course this didn't work either.

I knew you could manually delete songs by left swiping them, but was looking at albums most of the time, and the swipe feature doesn't work in ALBUM mode but only when looking at your holdings in SONG mode.

So, after deleting the 20-30 individual songs from my phone, I tried SYNCing my phone with iTunes again, and now my phone won't sync; it tries to perform the function, but just keeps trying and trying and trying and never succeeds.

I'm going to try doing a hard shut down on my phone and then try SYNCing again and see what happens then.

Also, since I actually listen to audiobooks more than anything, I really dislike the way iPhone's MUSIC app is set-up completely as a music app and lacks booksmarks, and quick 30 sec rewind button or fastfwd button like my audible app does.  But I may be the only person who has that frustration (not) lol.

AHHH!!! THANK YOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU!!! The stinkin albums section, hiding & causing all the damage. You are my hero of the day. I have come close to screaming when the stupid Cha Cha Slide comes up on my iphone. Extreme relief right here man. You made my day.

Oh man. That was it. After tireless attempts to delete songs, re-DL them and delete again, delete music usage, etc....that was it. That pesky "Album" section on the Music tab in iTunes. Didn't think to scroll down. Even if I did, I would never have known to check that section because I never sync anything there. Crazy.

What you can do alternatively is go to the itunes store (logged in as your account) and go to the music tab, scroll all the way to the bottom, where it says 'Manage'. There should be a link to your 'purchased' songs and what you can do is 'hide' your songs. This then automatically clears out the purchased songs from your iphone (when you sync it).

If you want to bring your songs back up again, you can also do this by following the steps on this link: iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases

    hope that helps!

    I had this problem.

It appeared as kind of a phantom/dull grey font colour on the itunes on my laptop and refused to be deleted/kept re-appearing. There were also a normal black font colour for other songs; these songs were the ones I wanted and currently downloaded.

    TRY THE FOLLOWING

    -open 'settings' on the device

-on the side tabs to the left, select 'music'

-look for the 'show all music' toggle

-make sure that this toggle is off/not green.

-check music on device, and it should be gone

I recently acquired two songs, one from Starbucks, and one from Amazon.    Neither one showed up on my phone, but both showed up twice on iTunes on my Mac.    So I showed the songs in Finder, and picked the duplicates and deleted them from within iTunes.    After a few minutes, the duplicates showed up.    After repeatedly deleting them this way, I also tried to delete them in finder.    Now they still keep showing up in iTunes, but they can't find the original, and want me to find the original.    I can still delete the phantom copy - for a minute or so, before they show up again.

When I sort my songs by date added, I see the real songs and the phantom songs with a next to them.

I have a smart playlist that shows unplayed songs and podcasts that I use all the time, and I want these phantom songs gone.

A clumsy solution with duplicates is to delete the duplicate, and then click on the phantom song and find the original.   Now two songs point to the same .mp3.     Then delete the duplicate without deleting the .mp3.

When you delete a song they stay there just incase you want them back but they shouldn't play.If they do play you should make a playlist and put the songs you want in ur playlists except the ones that u dont want.
