Q: Dell P2815Q

Has anyone bought the Dell P2815Q 4k monitor for use with their Mac Pro Late 2013?

Does it work for you?

I did and it doesn't work for me.

If I connect the hdmi cable from my mac pro to the dell, I do not see anything on the dell monitor.

If I connect the hdmi cable from my mac pro to an Vizio TV with hdmi input, it works  (1920x1080).

I am wondering if I have a defective monitor or there is some sort of design flaw in the Dell?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

I believe you need to use a DisplayPort connection to get the 4k resolution. From the Dell site:

Active thread(s) and mention of Dell models are already listed. Might want to scan, google or use search to pick out the threads.

The AD forum form uses sub sections for displays,

Should be easy to see - anything to do with nMP: are of course less than month old

The way to use DisplayPort is to buy a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. They are really cheap, because they are all wires, no conversion:

    One more thing

Today, the Dell P21815q is working.   Yesterday it was not.

HDMI out from the Mac Pro Late 2013 to hdmi in on the dell monitor

    3840x2160         refresh rate 30 Hertz

    1080p m             refresh rate 24,25,30,50 or 60

    1080i                  refresh rate  60  (NTSC)

are the 3 choices  when "scaled" is selected

The hdmi cable seems like it was the problem.   Different cable today!

One "strange" thing was with the "bad" cable, the built into the monitor would only let me select the input.  It would not show me all the other menu functions.

I did not get it to work with the Thunderbolt cable.

The Dell P2815Q works using an hdmi cable   and/or     thunderbolt to displayport ,  displayport to mini displayport cable.  It does not work with the thunderbolt cable I have.

Dell P2815Q on a MacBook Air

    OS X 10.9.2

    Disconnect display from computer.

Hit the Menu button on the lower right corner on the front of the display.

Make sure that the display is expecting input through the Display Port of the display.

Connect included Dell cable from display port of computer to display port of display.

In System Preferences, you have a choice between the highest resolution with the nano font, or

the next lower resolution (lower than an Apple display)

Unable to change settings on the display, as it seems to require a Windows computer to set options.

    Hey guys,

My P2815Q just arrived... and now it's connected to my late-2013 MacBook Pro 13 Retina via the supplied Thunderbold to DisplayPort cable, and set up as extended montior.

Works fine, including changing the resolution / scaling. However, I when the mouse / trackpad pointer moves to the P2815Q, there seems to be a latency, moves movement seems to be delayed and "jerky". (no such issue when the pointer is at the MacBook Pro's sreen.

Do you guys have the same problem?

    Thanks,

    Simon

I just got this monitor. Plugged into MacBook Pro (brand new version) Retina, OSX, etc.

    1. I have the same sluggish mouse movement that you described.

    2. For resolution, I have options 3840x2160 or 1080p or 1080i. The latter two don't work. With 3840, the text is very tiny.

Is there a way to make text bigger while still benefiting from crisp resolution?

That's exactly what the Macs with retina display do. That feature is expected any minute now.

Not sure I understand your response.

So, I've got this powerful 4K montior now, but the text is so small, I have a pounding headache from trying to read it.

I cannot choose any resolution on the mac other than 3840x2160.

I have to adjust font size, window by window, web page by web page, which is tedious, and some fonts can't be adjusted and are too small to read.

Are you saying that Apple is releasing some new feature that will fix all this?

Apple has released the software you desire. But it works only on Retina Display Macs.

The problem you are facing is so stupid (knowing that they have already solved it for other displays) that everyone is amazed that it is not already solved for your display.

So despite the prohibition against speculation here, I predict: a solution for this problem is imminent.

For now, lower the resolution, or put only photos on this display and text on another display.

With 10.9.3 Beta it is at least possible (besides native 3840x2160) to run the display in a "scaled" virtual 1920x1080 mode which uses the full resolution but logically acts as 1920x1080 display. This gives quite large fonts, so currently I stay with the native resolution. My perferred mode would be something like "behaves like 2880x1620" which is not yet possible.

    Yours

    Wolfgang

In my opinion, the P2815Q is not suitable for use as a primary monitor because of these problems.

However, I have kept it, and I'm using it as a secondary monitor. So, I use my Mac Cinema monitor for primary tasks, and then, I use the P2815Q for special tasks when I need a lot of real estate, and I can zoom the document (spreadsheet, slide, page) by 150-200% to make it readable on the P2815Q.

For this scenario, it's serving me well.

10.9.3 was released today, and it's definitely an improved experience for my Dell P2815Q. The Preference pane now includes a slider that goes from Larger Text to More Space (see screenshot below).

Obviously, this does nothing to fix the lagginess caused by the 30 Hz frame rate, but now I can at least read text without having to adjust every new browser tab and window I open.
