Mail icon says I have 1400 emails mailbox empty

How do I get rid of annoying icon count

    First, try a reboot, just to clear things up.  If you see the count again...

    Sometimes, usually following a system upgrade, the mail app starts over, and gets the unread message count from your ISP.     Log onto your mail account using safari, or a computer, and you will likely find these old unread emails.

    They are likely so old, they did not load onto your pad.

     

     

    You can delete them in bulk there.

    Thanks for the reply but I already tried these

    I did a refresh I disabled account then reenabled

    And the number came back

    I also went to my server and there are only 19 unread emails

    And I emptied the trash on server

    So far no help

    Same problem here. It was 500-some "unread messages" until I downloaded the latest  system (9.02) after which I've now got twice as many "unread messages" which are of course non-existent! Nothing I do seems to make them go away. (But I'm not ready to erase everything and start from scratch! -- that would be throwing out the baby with the bath water.) SOMEONE must have a solution!!!
