Sometimes, usually following a system upgrade, the mail app starts over, and gets the unread message count from your ISP. Log onto your mail account using safari, or a computer, and you will likely find these old unread emails.
They are likely so old, they did not load onto your pad.
You can delete them in bulk there.

I did a refresh I disabled account then reenabled
And the number came back
I also went to my server and there are only 19 unread emails
And I emptied the trash on server
So far no help

It was 500-some "unread messages" until I downloaded the latest system (9.02) after which I've now got twice as many "unread messages" which are of course non-existent! Nothing I do seems to make them go away. (But I'm not ready to erase everything and start from scratch! -- that would be throwing out the baby with the bath water.) SOMEONE must have a solution!!!
