Q: New hard drive replacement and upgrade from 10.6.8 to OS X 10.8.5 my GDrive mini external harddrive cannot connect with the Time Machine and my Canon Pixma MA 320 Scanner will not connect with the Solutions menu. Time Machine is ON

After updating a a new replacement harddrive from 10.6.8 to 10.8.5  my Time Machine cannot find my G Drive min and the icon for the drive has disappeared,   The drive was full and i OKd for it to erase old backups to make room. Now it appears to have disappeared completely from my computer.  Time Machine is ON and the G Drive appears to be functioning ( geen light on right side is on).   Disk Utility cant be opened because it is "being used in a Time Machine Backup". 

At the same time my Canon {Pixma MA 320  Scanner will not function because the Sol;utions Menu does not seem to connect with it. 

Both of these  problems are attached to theiMac by USB ports which function OK for othr uses. i have plugged and unplugged restarted everything. Still no go.
