Q: Dell P2815Q

Has anyone bought the Dell P2815Q 4k monitor for use with their Mac Pro Late 2013?

Does it work for you?

I did and it doesn't work for me.

If I connect the hdmi cable from my mac pro to the dell, I do not see anything on the dell monitor.

If I connect the hdmi cable from my mac pro to an Vizio TV with hdmi input, it works  (1920x1080).

I am wondering if I have a defective monitor or there is some sort of design flaw in the Dell?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

How did you get the screen to show you the text size options?

    I just installed 10.9.3.

When I open the Displays control window, mine says DELL P2815Q but it doesn't offer the text size adjustment.

Hi mitchmu, it looks the same for me (and it did so already with the latest Betas).

The Release Notes only talk about better 4K support for Mac Pro and MBP 15" Retina (late 2013). I have a 13" Retina (late 2013), so this could explain why I see no effect. May I ask you (and also datalogics-alexk) for the exact model of your Mac?

@mitchmu: I didn't have to do anything special. The text scaling options appeared immediately after I upgraded to 10.9.3.

    @Wolfii: I have a MBP Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013.

When I was on 10.9.2, the available options for Scaled resolution were... unstable. Sometimes I would get something like the screenshot that @mitchmu posted. Sometimes I would only have two options (3840 x 2160 or 1920 x 1080). Sometimes the box was empty! This instability appears to have been addressed by 10.9.3, as well.

    Wolfgang,

I have MBP Retina 13", I don't know the "model period" but I bought it just a few months ago from Apple, so it's just about latest possible.

I didn't realize the support is only for 15". Maybe that's why I see no difference.

Also, the Dell is connected to MBP through HDMI, whereas Cinema is connected through DisplayPort.

The only change I have noticed since upgrading is that performance is worse, much more unstable, far more crazy behaviors, such as content of screen disappearing, and entire screen getting fuzzy and unreadable on power-up. I had none of these problems before the "upgrade" so for me, it just worse across the board, no benefit.

@mitchmu: Try holding the Option key and selecting the Scaled radio button in the Display Preferences pane. This should allow you to toggle between the selector shown in my screenshot and the selector in your screenshot.

I just came across this while reading a support article, Using 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with Mac computers:

Hovering your mouse over one of the resolution options will show more detail on that option. To get a Detect Displays button to appear, press the Option key. To see all the available resolutions, hold down the Option key while clicking the Scaled button.

@datalogics-alexk: When I hold the hold the Option key and select the Scaled radio button, the behavior is the same, I still don't see the scaling options as shown on your screen.

In the article you quoted, it says: "Dell UP2414Q and UP3214Q: Choose Menu > Display Setting > DisplayPort 1.2 > Enable"

Do you know what this means? When they say "Choose Menu" - what does that mean? What is "Choose Menu" and how does one find it? Does one need to first load a specific application?

Also, the article talks about DisplayPort. I'm connecting via HDMI because I'm using DisplayPort for my old Cinema display.

Do you think that these new features might only be supported through DisplayPort and NOT through HDMI?

@mitchmu: "Choose Menu" refers to the display's built-in controls. The Dell P2815Q has 4 hardware keys on the bottom-right corner facing forward. If you press the fourth key, a menu appears and you can select the "Menu" menu item with the third button. I imagine that this is similar to the Dell UP2414Q and UP3214Q.

I'm not sure if this is supported via HDMI, but the Dell P2815Q is definitely not mentioned by Apple's support article.

    Hi datalogics-alexk,

Pressing the Option key on my MBPR 13" late 2013 only shows mor low-resolution options, but not the Retina-style scaling options that are shown on a MBPR 15".

Seems we have to hope and wait for another OSX update to get those.

P2815Q comes with a mini display port to display port cable.  So you can go ahead and plug the mini display port into the MacBook Pro Thunderbolt port and you won't need to buy any additional cables with the P2815Q.

Hi can you please tell me if the 2560x1440 (Low resolution) is by 30 or 60hz and how is your overall impression with the display?

The display is great. I am using it to drive my Mac Pro.

To get the display to work with your Mac use the cable supplied. (Mini Display port to Display Port.). My preference is to run the monitor at 60Hz at 2560 x 1440, which perfectly reasonable and has a nice refresh rate.

In either case be sure to plug into the correct port on the display to get everything to work. See the picture below:

I have the same case. I have tried connecting the monitor with dp cable and hdmi. No luck. I have tried various solutions but no luck.
