May 16, 2014 1:40 PM in response to brenden dvby emilyfromtyler,Thanks for the reply, brenden dv; the suggestions you gave looked promising, but none of the suggested solutions worked. Since my original post, I've found out a few more things: a generation 4 Shuffle did the exact thing...connected it to XP machine, no problems syncing, connected to Windows 8 machine, no problems syncing, connect to XP machine again, causes iTues to shut down.
Still have an additional second generation Shuffle that I haven't ever connected to the Windows 8 macine that will still sync properly with the XP machine.
Also, after the iTunes shutdown on XP machine when connecting the Windows 8-tainted Shuffles, there is a windows message that says "USB device not recognized."
The two suffles that cause this problems will connect and properly sync on the other (Mac) computers in the house, it only has trouble with the XP computer.
The best way to describe the issue is that syncing the Shuffles to the Windows 8 machine "does something" to the Suffles that makes them unrecognizable to only the Windows XP machine.
