Mar 21, 2014 3:19 AM in response to easiest_dinnerby mokus,"high definition audio device" relates to the audio link via the display port (which can support video and audio via thunderbolt, hdmi...). it's the graphic card driver which has to be updated, not the audio card driver
What worked for me on a MBP 2012 (Intel HD Graphics 4000, windows 7 64b) was to download and install the latest version of the Intel graphic card driver directly form Intel website. Unfortunately, this driver is not included in bootcamp nor proposed in windows update and has to be installed manually.

May 13, 2014 11:34 AM in response to colibryby fp0815,Hi everyone,
I have the exact same issue as colibry here and tried everything out found here and elsewhere. Except:
Manual install wouldn't work because of that error message. I remember to have had the same issue last year installing Windows 7 where downloading and manually installing the drivers would totally fix the problem.
Does anyone have a clue?

May 23, 2014 5:18 PM in response to colibryby Adam@1955,Hi there,
same here.
Installed Windows 8.1 with the ISO and Drivers from Bootcamp.
No sound on my MacBook Pro.
"High Definition Audio Controller" says
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Operation Failed
The requested operation was unsuccessful.
In this case Bootcamp and Windows 8.1 are not really usable.
I can't believe that there are no more people with this problem.
Hopefully, Apple will solve this.

Jun 24, 2014 1:46 AM in response to Adam@1955by HenkoSch,I'm having this issue for almost a year now! I cannot install Windows 8.1 through bootcamp because the installer recognizes the hybrid MBR that bootcamp created and forbids proceeding. If I get rid of the hybrid MBR and try to install it natively, then Windows setup works perfectly, but the sound does not work at all as you described, no luck with ANY driver. I'm stuck. No, don't tell me to use Parallels or VMware! I tried those! I need real native windows for my work! Do something about it already! I bought this Macbook from Apple because I thought they are quality products with excellent support. Clearly I was wrong! I am extremely disappointed! I have a MacBookPro8,1 (13-inch, Earchly 2011).

Aug 14, 2014 6:25 PM in response to gerardofromveracruzby nvt2106,My solution: Use DVD to install Windows 8.1 rather than using USB or ISO.
When using USB, boot mode is EFI
When using DVD, boot mode is Lagecy
It seems that Windows 8.1 doesn't work great in EFI boot
Let' try to install using DVD and let me know if it works please.
PS: It seems no way to change EFI to Lagecy mode without re-install

Dec 11, 2014 9:37 AM in response to Bobby NANby gtg258y,A modified version of Bobby Nan's post worked great for me! I am using a MacBook pro late 2010 with Windows 8.1. Went to CONTROL PANEL, clicked on HARDWARE AND SOUND, clicked SOUND, right clicked on my monitor icon (mine is an ASUS with no sound capability) and clicked DISABLE, and right clicked on HEADPHONES and clicked SET AS DEFAULT DEVICE. That way, when my headphones are in, it will use them, and when they are not, it will use my laptop speakers.

Jan 18, 2015 5:14 PM in response to harveyv1by JohnnySix,I have to agree that the problem with Intel Display Audio seems to be EFI boot related. I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my Mac Mini under Bootcamp, and then used "WinClone" software from the OSX partition to switch the Windows partition between EFI and Legacy booting. Every time - 100% - when booted under EFI it would lose HDMI as a Sound output device. It's not even a hidden device, and no amount of driver re-installation (including Intel's) would bring it back.
WIth Legacy (MBR) booting however, it always returns as normal, i.e. I get "Marantz AVR" in the Sound panel (my connected AV Receiver).
So ... I have to sacrifice swift Windows booting for the sake of being able to send multichannel movie sound out via the HDMI !

Jan 23, 2015 4:30 AM in response to JohnnySixby JohnnySix,The case for EFI booting affecting HDMI audio seems to be mounting. My main machine is a normal PC with Intel HD 3000 graphics, and although the sound was working through my Dell HDMI monitor originally, it too has totally disappeared after I upgraded my Gigabyte board's BIOS to UEFI.
Latest Intel HD graphics drivers have no effect; neither does power cycling, unplugging/plugging, deleting device in Device Manager.
Could it have something to do with lack of device enumeration due to the speed of EFI boot?
