Q: No Dolby Digital Apple TV 3 firmware 6.1 (6698.99.16)

Hi

I was running the above firmware on my main appletv, and noticed that Dolby Digital (DD) over spdif had stopped working, both in netflix and when streaming from itunes on my computer. I then took my daughters appletv and connected it to my receiver through spdif, and now DD worked, my daughters appletv was running firmware 5.3 (6105). I tried software resetting my main unit a couple of times, but that did not help. Lastly I updated my daughters appletv to firmwar 6.1, and then DD stopped working on that unit too...

Since then I have cuorisly found that DD is now working on my main unit, when I stream movies from itunes, but still not when watching a netflix-movie...

Anyone out there who have had the same problem?

Cheers Perer

Thanks for the help, but no luck. After extracting the file iTunes is verifying the file and then the 3194 error comes. I will try contact Apple and see if they want to help. But thanks again for the help.

Mine is 1469. Can't downgrade, the only option is to Airplay the movie, or quite from Apple.

Two months now since original post and still no solution. As Netflix have now removed the DD logo from content looks like we will have to make do with Surround Stereo from ATV box. Hands up who will upgrade their Apple TV when available?

At least with the latest generaton machines, there is simply no way we are going to be able to downgrade the firmware.  Anybody who tries is welcome to do so, but I am not wasting my time on that avenue anymore.

I suggest that we take a campaign to sites like Engadget and the like and make our unhappy voices heard.  Apple and Netflix basically only respond to pressure.

It seems that Apple is the one that should fix this issue, I have other 3(2 Sony +1 LG) stream devices with DD 5.1 audio in perfect working order.

All this appeared after ATV update from 5.3 to 6.x.x. :-(

People, Apple does not pay much attention to these forums.  If you want action, file bug reports with Apple (you can try Netflix also but I think it  is basically an Apple issue) and complain to "the media".  Facebook, Twitter, computer hobby websites, etc.

I just sent an email to Engadget. Hopefully they'll read it and inquire about it.

I have been on numerous calls for this issue over teh past few weeks.  Netflix told me I was a one off but I insisted and jsut called back again after workign with Apple.  I just got off a long call with Netflix and was able to get a technicain to work with Engineer while I was on the phone with them.  Netflix Engineering confimerd the problem and said that they are workign with Apple and the fix is due out in 6.2.  No release date yet however.

I can now take credit for the 3rd bug I have gotten resolved with Netflix.  PS4 with DD I field this one back in Decemmberr and Netflix Engineering confiremd and fixed the issue.  The Apple TV 6.0 release with poor video quailty is listed with Netflix as filed and resolved under the call I had with thier Engineerign department whcih resulteed in 6.1.  And I can take a great deal of crdit for the next 6.2 udpate.

Perhaops Netflix and Apple shoudl put me on their payroll.

Wow?!?!? You mean there were other hardware that had a problem with Dolby Digital on Netflix? I wonder if the folks on here who wanted to toss their AppleTV in the trash on here. Had already threw away their brand new PS4. Perhaps I should take a walk to my local trash dump to look for some barely used PS4s.

Thanks Kewlfocus.  That list is VERY helpful.

I have notifed ALL of these.  In case anyone needs some help in what to send, here is what I sent.  If you use this, you should modify it to use your own words.

SUBJECT:  Apple Broke NetFlix Dolby Digity with Apple TV Update 6.1

Dear Movie Lovers and Editors/Reviewers of Apple TV,

For a long time Apple TV was one of the only sources to view NetFlix HD movies with Dolby Digital sound.  However, Apple broke that with Apple TV Update 6.1.  It was fixed for a few days with 6.1.1, but now no longer works.

As any movie buff knows, Dolby Digital Surround Sound makes all the difference in the world when you have a good home theater setup.  The movie experience is seriously diminished without DD.

This is really unacceptable work and response from both Apple and NetFlix.  But I believe that most of the fault lies with Apple.

Could you please investigate this, and when you confirm this behavior, please put as much pressure on Apple as possible to fix ASAP. Please publish an article in your blogs/websites/magazines highlighting the issue.

Please pass on this issue to your colleagues at other web sites and publishers.

Thanks for your support in getting this issue resolved quickly.

How do we explain that it was fixed for brief time after an update then stopped working again?

It just started working for me again. No software update, but I got stuck in the Netflix app and had to hard reset the ATV.

Let us hope it lasts this time...

I just reset my ATV (by digging down into the General menu) but it had no effect.  I also tried unplugging the device and starting it back up.  Didn't work either.  I'm guessing either I missed something or you have luck I don't possess!

    Suggestion?
