You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

You are alternately opening the wrong versions.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.

Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.

Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

    Hi Peter,

Is there anything that we can do to restore the documents that we can't open?

I have the same problem as the user above.

    Many thanks,

    Nicola

Open them with Pages 5.2, which you will find in Applications or by searching with Spotlight.

    Read the post above.

    Peter,

    You the man.

However I can't even begin to follow your directions for essentially getting rid of the "old" version of Pages. I'm nervous I'll delete something essential.

Could you break it all down a bit more please?

    Open a window in Finder.

In the Sidebar you should see Applications, click on that.

Scroll down the window till you see an orange Pages icon. Drag that to the Trash on the Dock:

Finder > Menu > Finder > Empty Trash

Peter, isn't it the orange Pages icon that I want to save and the older, grayish, looks like a pen and ink bottle one that I want to trash? I'm afraid of losing some valuable docs if I trash the orange guy.

Whatever you do, don't trash Pages ’09 v4.3 in your /Applications/iWork '09 folder. It is the last functional WP package from Apple. This is the previous, blue ink bottle icon version.

If you are concerned about losing Pages v5+ content, then export it to Pages ’09 documents, and verify the export worked to your satisfaction by viewing these documents in Pages ’09. Then you can trash Pages v5+ in /Applications — the one with the gold pen overlaying a Pages document icon.

One you have done that, you may want to move Pages ’09 (Pages.app) from its /Applications/iWork '09 location into /Applications proper. The Finder looks at the individual document information when you double-click to open it. In this information, the application associated with the document is specified as /Applications/Pages.app, regardless of the version of Pages or its location, at the time of document creation.

No the orange icon is the newer bad version. That is the one you trash.

Newer is not better in this case.
