Q: creating a pop account

How do I create a pop email account?  Each time I try to create a new email account it builds an IMAP account which i do not want.  Somehow mysteriously I was able to choose between IMAP and POP at the top of a screen, but now this selection will not re appear for another account.

deggie, the OP didn't mention ANYTHING about modifying from defaults until his fifth post.  He talked about emails deleting when he didn't want them to.  So, OBVIOUSLY, he hadn't modified the settings... oh, until he mentioned that he had.

The default of any conversation should be about the default situation.   Do I need to nitpick about how many conversations on this forum assume the default, until the OP says differently?

Even you said: "If you delete an email from any device with IMAP it deletes if from the server. Don't delete it if you need to keep it."

Oh, but why didn't you clarify that was only the case if you were at the default settings?  You didn't specify you were talking about the defaults, either.  Why didn't you allow for the possibility that the OP had adjusted his settings.

It wasn't until his FIFTH post that he mentioned that he had adjusted his settings.  Until then, it was reasonable to assume (as both YOU AND I did) that he was using default settings.  Especially with him talking about emails deleting when he didn't want them to.

Based on what the OP had said up until that point, he was using POP in default settings and not understanding the adjustable settings.  But lo and behold, he then posts his settings... which still show the 'leave on server' unchecked.

But, hey, that's okay deggie.  You get to make an assumption about what the OP meant, but I don't... even when it was the same assumption.  Hmmm. Classy.

Oh hogwash. Let it go. The OP is happy. His solution works for him.

Translation: You called me out on the same thing I called you out on, so we'll call a truce...

    Works for me, deggie!

justpokinalong, you are absolutely right. Entering the wrong password brought me to a dialog box saying I would have to enter it all manually, now AT LAST giving me the choice of either POP or IMAP. So now I coud go with POP and all works well. Thanks!

Justpokin...you are an angel.  I have been in tears all evening (following a fruitless Genius Bar appointment earlier today and ISP tech support, too) trying to find how to put a POP account back on my phone.  I know these are TOTALLY first-world problems, but I was losing emails right and left with the stupid IMAP conversion my phone was forcing on me, and panicking all along the way.  I literally have tears in my eyes again; this time, they're tears of joy.  THANK YOU SO MUCH for typing your password incorrectly and, more importantly, sharing your glorious fix online.  Great karma has to be coming your way!

I'm with Jolleys! This post has saved everything I do with my email accounts! I use it to moniter my kids' emails - without disturbing their read/unread/deleted status.  I also have emails that I want to read on the PC, save on the PC but I don't need on my phone. Thank you justpokinalong for posting the workaround! The internet is the best invention ever! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

btw - when I tried to create a pop account with yahoo it worked fine.  I was trying to create the pop account with a hotmail account. Do you think this is a case of apple vs microsoft? very thankful for the workaround! Can't say enough!
