May 23, 2014 11:47 AM in response to pboehiby Johnb-one,An excellent question. Yes the late 2013 model Mac Pro( black cylinder, I think) is missing "conventional" digital audio input sockets. I've taken a look at your Rosetta 200 and it's a heck of a piece of work. not being much of expert, you'd be looking at a usb interface of some kind with toslink input. ART makes such a thing, so I'm told, maybe Tascam, Roland, or some no-name box from china. Price? maybe around $250--ish. If you don't need XLR inputs, those might work for you

May 24, 2014 8:16 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby pboehi,I have been looking - there are tons of USB to Toslink digital out devices, but no USB solution for digital in. I don't need a DAC, I need a converter Toslink to USB.

May 24, 2014 9:02 AM in response to pboehiby Johnb-one,well, I don't know of any that work 100% for sure
maybe the Turtle Beach advantage II. Problem is, I don't know if the USB sockets on any of these things could be used as an output...lots of them for USB input to toslink, but not really the reverse
good luck to you

May 26, 2014 6:36 AM in response to pboehiby pboehi,Obviously, Apple decided in its infinite wisdom that digital audio in via Toslink has to die, like the Floppy Disk and SCSI earlier in the course of the history of Apple. So future audio interfaces and DACs will have to offer Firewire or Thunderbolt connectivity to be able to interact with the new MacPro. As an Apple user, I am used to the "Apple giveth, Apple taketh away" behaviour of the company, so no problems there :-)
Thankfully, thanks to my own infinite wisdom, I opted for the Firewire card in the Rosetta 200 when I bought it (which I almost had forgotten about), so my problem is solved: I attach the DAC via Firewire now, which works fine.
On the other hand, there seem to be no standalone Toslink to USB audio in solutions on the market. Sure, there are music interfaces (as mentioned before) with much more extended functionality that could serve this purpose, but as a highend audio user, I strive for simple solutions with quality components.

May 26, 2014 9:28 PM in response to pboehiby jim_nw_mac_user,Actually, you do have digital audio! Retread the specs on the new Mac Pro "Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack". Get a Toslink-to-mini cable and optical works just fine. I got mine at Amazon, Micca 2M tos-to-mini optical digital cable. It is all specified in the Mac Pro technical specs.

You can use the HDMI port as a digital audio port to compatible devices, such as surround sound receivers.

Jun 9, 2014 1:08 PM in response to lllaassby Grant Hall,You want to buy a M-Audio Transit USB - That will give a Spdif Optical Digital input. The mac specs says the port does both but it's a mistake in the Apple Documentation
