May 21, 2014 9:17 AM in response to hayleealyssaby turingtest2,The temps are obviously wrong, but the rest of the stats look OK. The all songs skip after a given interval sounds vaguely familar but offhand I'm not sure where I saw it and a search hasn't found it.
Check that everything is working properly in the main iTunes library, then try the DFU restore method. My guess is some form of corruption of the database on the device.

May 23, 2014 6:41 AM in response to turingtest2by hayleealyssa,Thanks so much for your reply.
I tried the DFU restore method; this didn't fix the problem, either. After some googling I tried to format my iPod and noticed it was in exFAT format. I managed to format it in fat32 and thought this had fixed the problem, and it didn't.
Do you have any more suggestions? In the mean time I think I will go buy a new cord just in case, and perhaps try to use a different usb port on my laptop. I am sure it is not my laptop/external hard drive; everything is playing just fine in iTunes.
Thanks again.

May 23, 2014 6:55 AM in response to hayleealyssaby turingtest2,Nothing else I can think of just now other than syncing small chunks of media using the break up large transfers method when you try to reload it.

May 23, 2014 7:18 AM in response to turingtest2by hayleealyssa,Oh! Good idea. I have ~20gb of music in my library (I had cut it down quite a lot which is where this entire mess began) - I will try syncing in 5gb increments. I really do hope this works.

May 23, 2014 7:21 AM in response to hayleealyssaby turingtest2,Start really small just to confirm that the device works properly otherwise. Then increase the chunk size.

May 23, 2014 11:59 AM in response to turingtest2by sdcooper,I tried the actions recommended in the original post and got the message:
[can't open device]
ERROR! Diag Halt
I'm assuming this thing is toast?

May 23, 2014 12:48 PM in response to turingtest2by hayleealyssa,Alright, I think I've tried everything. Syncing in increments didn't help, I bought a new cable, used a different USB port on my laptop, formatted it through Windows, restored it a bunch of times. I've noticed that iTunes won't even recognize my iPod anymore if it is in disk mode, and now there are some retracts showing up if I run a diagnostic.
I have set up an appointment for Apple to call me; I hope I can send it in for servicing (I am still under the one-year warranty). The only thing I can think of now is that there is something wrong with where the iPod plugs in which is causing a faulty sync... I don't know.
Thank you so much for your help!

May 25, 2014 8:14 AM in response to familyfishnby EddyAlpha,Hello to all. Very helpful discussion, thank you for the diagnostic information.
My classic HD is in pretty poor shape:
---------------------
Retracts 16
Reallocs 1256
Pending Sectores 1856
Temp Max 56c
----------------------
I don't think it can be saved. I have reset the iPod seveal times, but as it refuses to accept any new downloads from iTunes, I guess it is time to buy a new one..Boo hoo..

May 27, 2014 3:27 AM in response to familyfishnby deathrowz,Is it possible to have rellocation like 1000 odd on a brand new Ipod classic 160GB. It was sealed and accessories and wheel looks untouched. However it has 7hrs of usage. I ran check disk and it came with few errors. Is this normal for a brandnew Ipod?

May 27, 2014 3:46 AM in response to deathrowzby turingtest2,If it is brand new I might settle for one or two reallocs, but really I'd expect it to be perfect.

May 29, 2014 12:13 PM in response to turingtest2by magginissimo,I did the test on my classic (2010ish, 160gig) and got this:
retracts 8
reallocs 13112
pending sectors 0
power on hours 42
start stops 13857
temp curret 34c
temp min 65 c
temp max 245c
Obviously the temps are out of whack, and the reallocs are crazy high. It had been saying on the ipod that it had 0KB available...but after the handy ipod slap, it decided it had 146 gigs free (after a series of clicking noises inside). Problem is, it still freezes iTunes every time it's connected.
At this point, I usually use my phone for music anyway, but it's frustrating to have the thing sitting around not working (especially when I paid so much for it). Any hope for it?

May 29, 2014 12:23 PM in response to magginissimoby turingtest2,I think it is time to call it on that drive. You could price up a DIY or third party swap out of the drive and see if you think it is worth trying.
