Q: iMac freezes after 10.9.2 update

Hello,

After the update to 10.9.2 suddenly the screen froze. I could still move the mouse cursor but the system was stuck so I forced a reboot. Now the iMac freezes while booting. The flipping wheel beneath the apple logo just stops and nothing happens. What can I do to work with my Mac again?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hi All followers of this crap upgrade. I have been following but until now not wanting to contribute.

I had all the full horrors of this upgrade frzen screen with just a mouse pointer etc etc.

Eventually Apple sent me to the local support center....oh dear this is very weird etc etc.Looks like a hardware fault.. $100 to retreive my data.....

After a lot of muching about the techs erased my hard disc and did a complete reload from a trusted site.

    Problem solved? Hardly.

I had to pay another $350 to get my 5 month old iMac back because this was a software fault, and they are not covered by the warrantee.

They must be kidding it is an OS error. In my world that is a hardware issue.

I'd lile to see what you can use a mac for without an operating system.....

Now the good bit.... I got thru to a Customer support manager and heard the "script" I am about to get a new imac and I would be upset if that happened to me, I am sorry your experience hasn't been good enough...

Well heres an idea APPLE>>>>> PAY ME SOME MONEY. I HAVE WASTED 10 OR MORE HOURS. TECHY TOLD ME NOT TO USE BACKUP OR IT COULD REOCCUR. AS I USED MIGRATION ASSIST THAT COULD BE A CAUSE...

WELL WELL late yesterday the woman from cust support offered my $250 to spend at the iStore to make me feel better.

I asked for it by email. But the ******** AT APPLE will not put it in writting.

I take a look at all the users with variations of my problem here and cannot comprehend how much time we have all wasted.

APPLE SHOULD PROVIDE COMPENSATION. THEY HARDLY PROVIDE THEIR TIME FOR FREE.

IF YOU AGREE THEN GO TO YOUR APPLE STORE OR GET ON THE PHONE AND ***** AT THEM BIG TIME.  WE ARE GETTING TREATED LIKE ****. MORALLY THEY HAVE NO EXCUSES THE UPGRADE WAS PLAINLY A STUFF UP. IN MY WORLD THAT MAKES IT THEIR PROBLEM TO FIX.

I have this problem too - driving me nuts.

I know it's not a hardware problem as i have 10.8 on a different partition.

I also fresh installed mavericks to try and fix, still the same problem.

Did internet recovery - still the same problem.

Reset PRAM, fixed permissions still the same problem

Cannot get past the startup screen most times.

Untill this problem is fixed my mavericks partition (my main work partition) is bricked.

2.8 iMac 27' - Late 2009, 8Gb Ram ATI Radeon HD 4850. I've been having this problem for a couple of months now and eventually my hard disk failed after all this restarts ! I've bought a new hard disk, Seagate SSHD ST1000DX001, did a fresh install (no backups or time machines) and currently on 10.9.3 ! The problem still persists i.e. iMac freezes when wakes up and flash is used, even on a web page !

Last night, I've been reading this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/15676049#15676049 which dates back to 2011 and I'm getting the feeling that this problem has never been fixed ! I've put my computer to "never sleep" and enabled "Screen sharing" & "Remote Login", so that I could be able to properly shut it down, in case the freeze reappears ! Hopefully this will fix the issue for the time being.

I really hope that this is not going to be my last purchased iMac, even though I seriously doubt it.

I'll tell you what worked for me.

But first, just to say, I had two months or more of freezes, overloads, my interface losing contact with the Mac.

I spent hours on the phone to Apple; took my 27-inch iMac into the city to a Genius Bar. Then I packed up my interface and sent it back to the retailer for testing.

Nothing wrong with the computer, nothing wrong with the interface.

So - after about three weeks of back and forthing with Apogee, I was finally advised to do the following:

    - Buy a new external drive (I paid £80 for a My Passport 1TB).

    - Load Mavericks on it

    - Load Logic X on it.

    - Don't put anything else on it.

    It worked!

However, I had to spend three days working with Native Instruments and Waves to get all my plugins properly filed and all my sample on my other external drive.

So now, all the samples are on a storage disk; Logic is operating on a Mavericks OS external drive; and whatever is on my iMac, causing all these problems, is now hiding, but doing no harm. I can work again. Hope this helps.

I have been following all threads about freezing issues to find the root cause of it and it seems that this problem is quite common even in newer models than mine. If anyone is curious I have documented my trouble shooting on this thread iMac 27" (late 2009), freezing - List of solutions tried. Perhaps it can help or guide you further to other trouble shootings.

I have come to an conclusion that this has to be a GPU + Crappy Graphic driver + Hardware acceleration problem that previous and current Mac have.

I suggest trying this free GPU test software (http://www.geeks3d.com/gputest/) and see if you have re-create the freezing issue by yourself. It's not a solution per say but you have to find the source of the problem before finding solutions. Save some money, time and grey hairs!!!!
