Yes. Keyboard shortcut: When recording, select the black "Screen Recording" bar by clicking anywhere on it.. Press Ctrl-opt and, as you move your mouse cursor over it, you'll see the round black dot change to a ||... Click on that and you've paused your recording - note the black dot has changed to red. When you want to continue recording, click the red dot and it starts back up again.

Hi I would much like t pause using Quicktime for screen recording also.

However, when recording with Quicktime X, there is no apparent 'screen recording' bar. The bar shrinks into a small icon: a circle with a square in the middle, in the narrow menu bar.

Pressing Ctrl-opt has no effect. Hovering over the recording icon does not change the icon.

Is there anyone who has paused a screen recording in Quicktime X (QUicktime 10)?

Sorry, I now have same problem.

Whether it's because I upgraded to Mavericks OS 10.9.1 and/or to Quicktime 10.3, those Pause functions no longer exist.

Nor does the old black "screen recording" dialogue box that enabled you to do that as well as control recording volume and to see elapsed recording time.

It seems Quicktime 10's functionality has been severely limited.

Apple's keyboard-shortcut page to "Quicktime 10.x" functions (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5883?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) is out of date and wrong.

This thread is now re-opened. Anyone else have solutions?

@Vitalii,

While it would be nice to get a personal response from Apple, we all know that's not possible. One company, millions of customers. The best we can do is to participate in sharing our requests via the appropriate channels, and I provided that link above for the QuickTime app. I hope you followed through with submitting your own feedback.

You can view all feedback pages here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

There's a certain satisfaction in knowing you did your small part to push Apple in the direction we want them to go with feature requests. While it can take time, we can almost guarantee they won't deliver what we want if we don't give feedback. So giving feedback is a great step of action.

This video explains how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=389hhtOXIOc

The key steps:

  • Click on Quicktime in the dock to make it active
  • press Esc to bring up the Recording bar
  • hold down Alt (option) to reveal the Pause button
  • click on the Pause button
  • click on the red button to resume recording

This works for me under MacOS 10.9.3
