Q: Can't Sign In to iMessage/FaceTime on iPad

I recently changed my Apple ID Password and since that time, I can not log in to iMessage or FaceTime on my iPad.  I CAN log in to iTunes and Find My iPad just fine, so I know I am using the new password.  However, when I attempt to start Message or FaceTime, I am immediately taken to a Login Screen that is asking for my Apple ID and Password.  It always returns the error

iMessage Activation

An error occurred during activation. Try again.

I've been reading through these forums and I have tried everything I 've seen posted.  The biggest frustration is that they all say to "Turn iMessage/FaceTime Off" ... well, I can't even GET to that stage because as soon as I go Settings>Messages it TAKES ME TO A LOGIN SCREEN.

I have verified the DATE/TIME/LOCATION for the iPad.

I have rebooted the device several times.

I have synched the device with iTunes several times.

I have logged out of every spot I could find that use my Apple ID (iCloud, iTunes)

First Gen iPad, WiFi Only connection (yes, I have verified it is connected to the network and able to browse sites on the Internet).

Thanks!

iPad, iOS 7.1.1
