Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hi Everyone,

I have macbook pro late 2011 15 inch with 6770m GPU and shared similar problem since last april 2014..

I have replace factory thermal pase to silver one.

now my mbp seem back into business as usual after this:

    1. I check to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237, it seems that the correct smc is 1.5. but my mbp Installed smc 1.7, I don't know how can my mbp update to SMC 1.7 but I manage to downgrade the smc to 1.5 again with refit (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4855319?tstart=0). with smc 1.5 my mbp more stable as long as I don't let 6770m GPU work hard and get it's temp pass to 75C.
    2. I happened to find out that AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext(AGPM) not correctly loaded in my machine, I do reinstall os, from lion, mountain lion, and mavericks still not loading AGPM properly. I dont know what cause this default behaviour.. so I edit AGPM.kext info.plist to add my GPU into the list to make it load properly.. and..

    Screen Shot 2014-05-25 at 11.12.58 PM.png

Notice that AGPM unknownPlatform then, add GPU device id it load my GPU..

this is what I change AGPM info.list, it says "Vendor1002Device6741" before which mean AMD 6770, but my GPU shows "Vendor1002Device6740" no wonder it does not load..

    Screen Shot 2014-05-26 at 10.46.12 AM.png

I'm guesing that hwPstate is the max(0) and min(3) parameter to run the GPU

my GPU vendor and device id

    Screen Shot 2014-05-26 at 2.27.54 PM.png

Running cinebench after AGPM load twice, no problem under battery

    Screen Shot 2014-05-26 at 2.38.28 PM.png

I tested this on MacBook Pro late 2011 15, I don't know if it work out for early 2011 mbp as well...

PS: I just want to share my experience with my mbp maybe it help yours too, if anyone Intrested to try "Do it at your own risk".. I know what it feel to lose precious notebook that we used for living, hope apple will give the best solution for this problem..

    sorry for my bad english

    Cheers..

The AMD 6750 has the ID 0x6741 so that certainly a nice find and odd but I can confirm that AGPM seems to be running properly here yet the problem occured...

But maybe you found the key for some other modifications which prevent the use of the AMD GPU by the System; I haven't even though looking into the configuration of the PM driver. Thanks a lot!

I am having the same problem with my GPU.  I paid 1600 for this laptop and it's already dead?  I have an appointment at the genius bar Wednesday but I already know they will want to charge me an arm and a leg to fix this problem which is their fault plain and simple.  As it stands now I am considering never buying an apple product again, the substandard quality and lack of action is ridiculous.

I am facing the same problem. After reading all the review and persistent issues that has never been resolved, I feel like dumping my Mac Book and going for somthing new. May be a slick, Surface!

I am thinking about buying surface or other top window laptops with quality built. I paid a lot of money for my MacBook Pro early 2011 . My 2008 MacBook unibody still working perfectly fine and I have that to my brother. Apple does not want to accept responsibility for this case.

Apple software is great. That said, their hardware may look pretty but is ultimately flawed. Increasingly, it seems that 'time-bombs' are built in, in order that the 'cult of apple' can continue to be milked for cash.

My 2011 macbook pro fell victim to this sae gpu issue, so for the same price as a current macbook pro, i built the most powerful computer i have ever even touched, which is now a hackintosh. I wont be giving apple another penny, and if i have any issues, ill simply fix them myself.

I imagine Apple will neither notice or care that they are beginning to lose loyal, long-standing custom.

17" MBP. Same issues all around.  Started two weeks ago, but want to add that since the machine was new I'd sometimes get a quick full screen of color snow. It never created a problem, but worth noting.

Meanwhile, I was told by the Geniuses it was possibly my 3rd party RAM, but after three other sets tried, I rule that out. Money spent, problem remains.

I was also told it could be my hard drive that has never had a problem, but failed the Genius SMART test.  That got disregarded after I booted to the Internet recovery and still had video issues.  It also ruled out the "it's your software" claim by the Geniuses.

Didn't save a lot of time with that, because I had already reinstalled OS X twice.

I'm posting here so that Apple sees yet another unhappy customer and shareholder.  This is an issue with the AMD discreet GPU. Perhaps one of us will tip the scales to get Apple to force a campaign recall.

As others have reported, after lots of testing, this is NOT caused by the switching to or from the discreet GPU. It is within the GPU, so no matter what you do in parts replacement, I contend the issue will return.

Now I'm stuck not using my external display and using the integrated graphics. Painfully slow for a power Final Cut Pro user...

    there are 2 issues

    regarding reballing or reflowing:

I spoke to Microfix, a dutch APPLE Premium service provider and they stated:  An Apple Premium Service Service is NOT ALLOWED to do reballing or reflowing even if it's for modification (as opposed to repair)....the only thing they are allowed to do is to exchange the logic board...which doesn't really help the case......

other issue is (and i hope PS3Specialist could help out on this):

Considering upgrading to a higher GPU ( i got a 6490M with a A1286 board)....appearently (not verified yet) it's not recommended to upgrade due to higher energy consumpty plus higher temperature, which possibly could cause other components to overheat, and maybe something needs to be reset or reprogrammed on the logic board:...the question for me would be....can you still upgrade a 6490M to a 6770M or 6970M without these problems, with a A1286 board?...
