Q: iTunes is not recognising CD's when I put them into my drive. Help!

I was recently having trouble with my iTunes not recognising my iPod. I found a suggestion on a help forum that suggested uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes which did indeed make iTunes recognise my iPod again.

However, seemingly as a result of this, a new problem arose.

Ever since this my DVD drive does not recognise CD's anymore.

When I click on iTunes now it comes up with this error message. I have tried (as it suggests) to uninstall and reinstall iTunes but it still comes up with this same message.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Thomas.

    Hi Frosty_Potter89,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand you are seeing an alert that the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing after uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. When you uninstall iTunes from a Windows computer, you must uninstall iTunes and all of its components in a specific order. That information can be found in the following article.

Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923

    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:

    1. iTunes
    2. Apple Software Update
    3. Apple Mobile Device Support
    4. Bonjour
    5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.

If you did go through these steps as described above when you were troubleshooting the iPod not being recognized in iTunes and you are still getting the registry settings error, you will need to install the device filter in the Windows registry. Those steps can be found in the following article.

iTunes for Windows: "Registry settings" warning when opening iTunes

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3299

    I hope this helps,

    -Joe

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for this. I did just as you asked and whilst the error message as I initially print screened didn't show up my laptop still failed to recognise a CD in the drive.

    Thanks for trying.

    Hey Frosty_Potter89,

Did you follow the steps in this article to install the device filter in the Windows registry?

iTunes for Windows: "Registry settings" warning when opening iTunes

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3299

    1. Open Registry Editor:
XP: From the Start menu, click Run. In the resulting dialog, type regedit and click OK.
Vista: From the Start menu, type regedit in the Start Search dialog and press Enter.
Windows 7: From the Start menu, type regedit in the "Search programs and files" dialog and press Enter.
    2. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue.
    3. Click the plus sign (XP) or arrow (Vista and Windows 7) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand its contents.
    4. Expand the contents of SYSTEM.
    5. Expand the contents of CurrentControlSet.
    6. Expand the contents of Control.
    7. Expand the contents of Class.
    8. Click to select the heading that begins with "{4D36E965-." It should look like the image below.

    TS3299_05-select_key--en.jpg

            9.  Choose File > Export.

          10.  In the dialog that appears, make sure the "Selected branch" button is selected and save the file where you can find it. This is a backup of this registry key, which you should keep in case you need to reimport your original settings later.

          11.  On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the UpperFilters entry and choose Modify. If the UpperFilters entry is missing, follow these steps:

              a. Right-click the empty white space within the right-hand portion of the Registry Editor window.

              b. From the shortcut menu, choose New > Multi-String Value.

    TS3299_04-upper_filters--en.jpg

              c. Name this new value UpperFilters.

              d. Right-click the new UpperFilters entry and choose Modify.

          12.  In the window that appears, use the appropriate steps below to add the iTunes device filter to the "Value data" box.

If the "Value data" box already contains text, follow these steps:

              a. The text contained in the "Value data" box represents third-party device filters. If you remove these device filters, the third-party software that installed them may not function. In the example below, NTIDrvr and SiRemFil represent these third-party device filters.

    TS3299_01-device_filters--en.jpg

              b. Click the box below this text. This removes the highlighting from the text so you can type without overwriting these device filters, and it places the cursor below the text.

              c. Type GEARAspiWDM to add the iTunes device filter.

    TS3299_02-device_filters--en.jpg

If the "Value data" box is blank, type GEARAspiWDM to add the iTunes device filter. See the example below.

          13. Click OK.

          14. Restart the computer.

Note: If you follow the steps in this article and find that Windows doesn't recognize your optical drive, followthese steps.

You can learn more about device filters.

    Thanks for reaching out,

    -Joe

Yes I have done all that but still nothing happening. Bizarre.

    Thank you for trying.

I don't use it an awful lot and we have a computer elsewhere in the house where I can burn the CD's I want onto iTunes (I've tried the same CD's on there and they work by the way), so it's not catastrophic but it's just annoying. It definitely started happening after I reinstalled iTunes the first time so I assume the problems are down to my faulty uninstallation.
