May 20, 2014 2:18 AM in response to Zach Fosterby hgnchrs,For me, it solved the issue when I change the settings in the system preferences > general > show scroll bars to "when scrolling". (it also works if there is no mouse connected with the setting " autmatically based on input device").
Hope this helps someone.

May 26, 2014 8:29 PM in response to Zach Fosterby dbabbage,I have been experiencing what I presume is this irritating problem (the original screenshots from the OP weren't loading for me today) for a long time. Drives me insane.
It used to be that if you closed a finder window with the Red X, that was the new default. Perhaps there was some other condition I've forgotten, like only if you'd only just opened it and rearranged it or whatever. Anyway, that clearly wasn't working for me for window size sufficient to display two columns without loosing the start of the left hand one, even though doing that was resetting other things (like the default position of a window on the screen).
Nothing in this thread seemed to be a slam dunk solution to me, so I tried experimenting with holding down modifier keys—Option, Control, Shift etc—as I clicked the Red X. And it appears to have fixed my problem, at least so far.
It appeared to me that it was holding down Shift-and clicking on the Red X was what fixed the issue. That may not be the case, as I was trying various things. But what is clear is this is the first time in many moons that windows are opening up the right size. They haven't done that for ages. Perhaps may work for you too.

May 26, 2014 8:52 PM in response to dbabbageby dbabbage,Nope—think I had it wrong. What it appears is that if you hold down the Option key while you resize it, and then after setting it you immediately close the window by clicking the Red X (must click, not use the key command to close) then the final size will stick as your new default.
This is slightly weird, as holding down the Option key also simultaneously resizes based on the midpoint of the window, so you find yourself dragging in and out the left hand size of the window too, unless it is hard against the left hand side of the screen and you're making the window larger—which will keep the left side constrained. Either way, once you've got the size you want this does seem to become the new default.
Looks like this is the solution though. Reproduced it a few times at least. Finally?

Sep 19, 2014 6:08 AM in response to dbabbageby Zach Foster,Figured I would check this thread and see if anyone found any new developments
Looks like plenty of new things to try! Unfortunately, it does look like Apple archived my screenshots, but by the sound of it, everyone knows what the Finder windows are doing. I'll try these various troubleshooting steps soon and let everyone know my results!
Thanks!

Sep 30, 2014 9:09 PM in response to Zach Fosterby dog dad,Hi Zach,
Thanks for starting this thread. I have this issue too. However, as you pointed out, the .PNG images you posted in your opening post apparently got archived by Apple—they aren’t displaying on my Mavericks iMac, even after I’ve logged in to the discussion and did some basic system maintenance. I just get a “loading” candy cane progress bar, then broken image symbols. I suppose it would be possible to view them on the Wayback Machine at http://www.archive.org. Meanwhile, any chance you could quickly re-upload them?
Big thanks,
Doug in San Francisco

Sep 1, 2016 12:39 PM in response to cd-qualityby mooncaine-again,In Yosemite, this still happens to me. Still a huge waste of time, lots of extra wear and tear on my hands over the past several years, just resizing a column after almost every change I make to a view, even just spinning a folder open or shut.
Finder column widths in List view are bugged, and this unfixed bug literally hurts my hands.
How many years has this frustrating flaw gone unfixed so far? I count 3 years, minimum.

Sep 2, 2016 8:54 AM in response to mooncaine-againby Eric Root,Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for improvement. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
