Q: I have a fourth generation IPad and want to download iOS wirelessly.  I would like the latest version my I-pad can handle.I am tring to join Badoo. Please advise.

I have an IPad bought in late 2012.  I think it is fourth generation.  It came without a pen.  I am farly  lifeless about how to proceed downloading a level of ios that it can handle.  I. Have only bought one app in my left.  Did that a few years ago so I suppose I had a certain level then.  Am trying to download a new app and it's telling me I need iOS 6 or better.  It's going on a week of trying.  I need direction.  Also trying to join Badoo but it too says I need iOS.  How should I proceed?

iPad, I bought the IPad in late 2012.

All iPads come without a pen.

Check the model number on the back cover as shown here:

My guess is you will see A1219 or A1337, meaning you have an original iPad.  If this is true, then you cannot run any iOS version later than iOS 5.1.1 on that iPad.

First we need to determine what you have.

Go to Settings->General->About->Model  And copy your Model number Here.

Then you can go to Settings->General-> and look for "Sofware Update"    If its there you can start the Update form there.  If it is a fourth Generation iPad then it can go up to iOS 7.1.1

iPads do not come with pens, your finger is all you need.

Not sure what you mean by 'came without a pen', no iPad has yet had a stylus with it.

Your current iOS version is shown in Settings > General > About > Version ? If that shows iOS 5+ then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option on your iPad for direct update on your iPad ; if it's iOS 4 then you can only update by connecting it to a computer's iTunes.

Before you do the update connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy your purchases over to your computer, and preferably copy any important documents off the iPad (e.g. via the file sharing section on your computer's iTunes, via your wifi network, email, dropbox etc, whatever the app supports), your photos and videos, force a backup (backups).

    Updating iOS version : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623

You can only update a device to the highest iOS version that it supports, which for but the original iPad is currently 7.1.1

You had to assume I knew nothing.  I saw the software update and started downloading but it says I have6 hours to go but the library closes in an hour.  If I can't do it in stages, I'll have to go to another wifi connection.  Thank you

You can do it through a computer running iTunes if you have access to one.

Otherwise, you'll need a better internet connection as the update can be rather large.
