Q: Freezing on internet connection

Though all of these steps may or may not be needed, I'm including them all.
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

10.5, 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).
Click OK.

I have other computers that use the same connection just fine.
With the trouble powerbook G4 it doesn't matter if I get on the internet via Wi-Fi or if I plug in the eathernet cable directly. Shortly there after I get the spining ball and Safari freezes. Even if I have nothing open and I connect to the internet then I cannot open anything.
Reboot. Turn off the connection. And if I didn't wait to long all works well. Just cannot connect and expect anything to work.

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem & the Startup right after that for clues.
click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A couple dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

May 25, 2014 6:36 PMby Geraldob263,Yes. It freezes up soon after it sees the internet connection and it starts working. I wondered so I looked for signs of activity from the modem LED's but saw none. And again this happens whether any programs are opened or even if none are opened.
With theinternet off all seems to be okay. Then shortly after plugging in the internet, it freezes. I connected via my wi-fi. Then the free one from the RV park, and also from the ethernet cable that come from the modem to my airport wirelss rotor.
All my other computers have no problem.
I really appreciate you responding ang I will do as you have suggested as soon as I get back home. You see I have left for the week end which includes Monday. I will be home sometime tommorrow. I left that computer there.

The following is the console data. I t took three minutes this time befor it failed, so I tried it again. That data from console is added also. This second time it froze faster than I have ever known.

Also...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
