Q: Second monitor showing background but no content

Strange issue happening here:

I have a Philips monitor hooked up to my Macbook Pro (OSX 10.9.2). It was working fine, and then all of a sudden it stopped working. I tried another cable, and it would turn on and display the background - so there was a cable issue - but now it won't show any windows or content on the second monitor. As in, if I drag something over to the second monitor, it won't show it at all.

How can I get this to work again?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    Hi Meowts,

It sounds as if the settings for your display arrangement has been lost by your MacBook Pro. In order to set it up again, you will need to go into System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement as described in this article -

OS X: Using multiple displays in Mavericks

Look particularly at this section - Arranging your displays

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Best,

    Hey Brett,

That issue ended up being solved, just a loose power connection (whoops).

Weird however, is that after all this, the maximum (well, only) resolution that I have to choose from through the display preferences is 1024x768 - which is a bit of a bummer really! I searched and this monitor has a max resolution of 1920x1080. Yet I'm not given this option... anything I can do to get around this?
