Q: Magic Mouse keeps losing connection

For the past several days, my magic mouse keeps losing connection to my MacBook Pro, and most of the time it won't even connect at all. I thought the batteries needed changing at first, but that didn't help either. I keep going into my Bluetooth settings to try and manually connect it but, again, it didn't work. Can anyone suggest ways to try to fix this problem?

    Good morning all,

Well I have tried EVERY recommendation here and still the mouse drops out.I even contacted my isp provider thinking that was the problem.  I am so disappointed with this as it is only about 3/4 months old and cost a fortune to have an Apple mouse to go with my new Mac Pro.  Only answer I have now is to go to shop today and buy a mouse that works.  Besides why on earth spend $100 near enough and then have to pack the thing with paper??  It is a big thumbs down to Apple for this device. Im hoping they will take it back next time I am near a store.

If your mouse is only 4 months old it is still under guarantee.   Take it back to the store (or any Apple store) and explain your problem.   You may have to leave it for testing if the root problem cannot be seen at the time.   It should be exchanged if the complaint is fair.

Remember, we only read of the odd complaint here (considering the huge number sold) so things often sound worse than they really are when someone has your kind of experience.   Hopefully the replacement will prove satisfactory in every way.

If you have still the guarantee, go back to the shop.

For me, the alu foil has worked very well. That mouse finally broke (literally) of heavy use and I bought a new one. That new one does not seem to have the old problem, I use the same batteries and no need for the alu foil. So, if your mouse is new it might be another issue.

If Apple does not help, do try the aalu foil however...

    Thanks for replying.

seventy one, I understand you only hear of the odd one when there are millions of users I expect, however once I started googling, it seems quite a few people have the same problem.  Im just surprised that this is still an issue a few years later. The ideas to solve the problem are really good, but blowed if I know why you should have to do that. BTW I have tried several different batteries.

bjprc, I did indeed try the alfoil...good idea, but no luck.  Strangely enough I noticed when the tech in store tested it on day I bought it that it didnt seem right, but never having used one before thought nothing of it.  It has always been very iffy, but past few days just not worth the casing it is made of.  I certainly will be taking it back.  just a flipping nusance as the shop is some distance away, so could be a while.  Not to worry, wont be losing sleep LOL, I bought a Logitech today and everything is working normal again.

Nice to chat about it though.

    Mornin' all,

I have had this same problem with my Magic Mouse off and on for the last few months and I have to say that it is indeed a battery size problem. When I use Duracell batteries then everything is OK, but when I use another brand, say Amazon Rechargable batteries, then the mouse suffers dropout and I have to resort to the Magic Piece of Folded Paper Between The Batteries Trick - it works everytime!! It would appear that Duracell Batteries are indeed ever so slightly thicker than other batteries!

Have a jolly summer boys and girls!

I have a bluetooth headset that I sometimes use to listen to music with my MacBook Pro.  I've noticed that the music stops at the same time my mouse stops working.  So, this proves to me at least for my case, it's NOT a mouse-battery-connectivity problem.  My bluetooth connection drops for both bluetooth devices simultaneously.  In my case, the connection is usually re-established automatically after a few seconds but this is really annoying.

I have to say that in my humble opinion, I think that Apple and wireless connections just do get on!  I have had trouble with the MM dying on me and more recently a number pad I bought, also wireless, died on me. So because Apple cannot/will not produce a wireless keyboard with a number pad as a truly built in system, I bought a Apple USB keyboard complete with an integrated number pad and everything works much better. The MM very rarely loses connection nor does the keyboard now.

In other words, it matters not what batteries you use or what packing you use to get a better connection, get rid of WiFi with your Apple and use USB!!

    Cheers

Yeah, I think I'm going to get a USB mouse and be done with it.  I already use a USB das keyboard and it works great with my MacBook Pro.

Although I love the magic mouse when it works, the constant lost connections are really annoying. I even bought a new one, same problem. Have tried different types of batteries, same problem.

Have tried putting bits of paper in various places, didn't work.

Now I put thin metal washers under the bottom of the batteries to add some extra length/pressure and this seems to solve the problem.

Apple, this mouse has a serious design problem, you shold stop selling the current model immediately. It can't be that hard to improve the design for better connection with various battery types.

I have two of these horrible mice. I'm seriously considering throwing one of them against the wall, but I'm afraid of hurting the wall. It loses connection (and then reestablishes it) every 5 minutes. But it makes me beg first. I tried the piece of paper trick and it worked for about a day. I'm not going to get metal washers. On my laptop I can at least use the trackpad, but on my iMac, no luck.

Seriously, what kind of piece of $%*& is this that so many people have issues with it? I love Apple products, but this one is awful.

I was about to throw both of my mice against the wall. But after adding the metal washers, I've not had one single lost connection!

Apple should even consider including those metal washers (or similar add-on solution) in the package until they've changed the mechanical design of the battery compartment to better adapt to small variations in battery size.

Apple, look at this picture. Those two cheap metal washers make the diffrence between extremely annoyed users and 100% satisfied users of a mouse that deserves to do the magic instead of having it ruined by poor battery compartment design.

Hans, thanks for the photo. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who wants to smash this mouse. I had no idea that batteries varied in size. Currently mine are Duracell and I thought it would be fine.

Can you tell me the size of the washer in your pic?
