Q: iTunes 11.2 Crashes On Startup

Allowed the suggested upgrade from iTunes 11.1.5 to 11.2.  Unfortunately, iTunes crashes on startup.  I have attemted fixes for previous versions of iTunes to no avail (updating Quicktime, and adding "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" to the PATH).

I can successfully launch iTune in safe mode by holding the CTRL-SHIFT keys down.

Anyone else having the same problem?  Anyone know what to do?

Exactly what error message is produced when it crashes?

mvsuriano:   I think that you've isolated the problem!  Nice work.  I'm not too quick on menu selection with pulldowns so I simply "disable"d my internet connection, fired up iTunes (NOT in "safe mode") and verified that didn't crash and played music.  I then went to menu "store" and noted that the pulldown did indeed show "Sign Out" instead of typical "Sign In".  So it thought that I was signed in though I wasn't connected to internet.  I selected Sign Out and it complained about connection but did indeed leave me with menu now showing "Sign In".

I then re-enabled internet connection and seems to be working fine.  I'll just stay away from the iTunes "store" until

    they fix this 11.2 problem.

Hey Apple!  Pass on to QC and verify, will ya?!

OK, I think this handles it for Windows users.  Thanks to  mvsuriano, the problem appears to be that 11.2.0 & 11.2.2 start up and default to logging you into the iTunes store.  That appears to cause the crash.

I have verified that once you are able to "Sign Out", that will leave you signed out even through different sessions and fresh power cycles.

    Steps:

    1.  Disconnect from internet.

    2. Start up iTunes.  Notice that it no longer crashes!

    3. Go to menu "store" and observe pulldown menu item "Sign Out".  Select it.  It now shows "Sign In".  Don't sign in!!

    4. Reconnect to internet.

You can now quit iTunes and when you bring it back up, observe in the "store" menu that it now shows "Sign In".

You can even power off your PC and when you bring it back up, iTunes is still working OK now.

Disabiling the internet connection and signing out does prevent the startup crash even after reenabling the internet connection.  However, when I tried to refresh my podcasts, the same hang occurred even though I was not signed into the store. So it appears that any function that needs internet access may hang.

Try going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases? You should find that you can sign into the store now.

    You could also try this...

Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.

    cmd /k netsh winsock reset

Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.

You should get something similar to this:

    netshwinsockreset.png

Reboot the computer. Can you update podcasts now?

At Edit > Preferences > Store, I do not have an option called Show iTunes in the Cloud Purchases?

iTunes podcast download still hung after the netsh winsock reset and reboot.

Just an FYI: The WinLogoKey+RWinLogoKey+R execution of cmd /k netsh winsock reset failed due to lack of elevated priviledges.  So, I opened an authorized cmd window, executed netsh winsock reset and rebooted my PC.

Since downloading this (hahahahaha) update which supposed to result in fixing the problem with regard to podcasts, plus fixing stability problems.....

    1.  Itunes crashes when I try to enter the iTunes store.   (windows tries to fix it, but fails.)  That should motivate someone at Apple to get this thing repaired.

    2.  The program hangs for at least a minute before I can use it.

    3.  All of the episodes for Radio Lab show up in the list, and I had to unsubscribe in order to delete them.  (and then couldn't get into the store to resubscribe.  Attempting to delete the list crashed the program.

3a.  It still doesn't delete played podcasts.  Not one.

    4.  There was a scary part, where iTunes hung and could only go thru step one while syncing my ipod. (a new one by the way.)   Closing the program was dicy.

    5.  I deleted iTunes, and then tried to reinstall the previous version, which was crap, but actually worked....without crashing.  No joy.

    6.  I am not an Apple beta tester.  I am not going spend one more second attempting to get a patch to work, on windows, when I just invested another 250, in another Ipod...and clearly this is just another case of Apple forcing users to a program with crashes their machines....

and then doesn't allow them to reinstall a program with did work, if imperfectly.

    Fix it.

Was able to access the iTunes store by (ta Daa!) disabling the absolutely useless "Genius" (snort) feature!

what a thrill to find out you can disable Genius.!

Interesting. I wonder why you don't see that?

What region is iTunes/your store account set to?

What about turning off Genius from the General tab as nanorich has done?

    Hi don_wms:

Could you also check what version of iTunes is displayed when you go to Help | About iTunes.  If you installed the latest update you should have v. 11.2.2.3.

    MS Windows 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP2 * Firefox 29.0.1 * IE 9.0 * 32-bit  iTunes v. 11.2.2.3

I don't have an iCloud account.

Not sure what region means, but my language is English (US):

    Genius is off.

    The version is 11.2.2.3:

    Thanks, Don WIlliams

If you still can't get it to work then see the Further Information area of the user tip and try rolling back to the most recent version of iTunes that worked for you.

Since iTunes in the Cloud isn't available in all countries I was considering that as a reason why the option might not be shown, but it isn't likely to be relevant.
