Q: iTunes has stopped working. Why?

iTunes opens but can not access the store. I get the message "iTunes has stopped working". Using iTunes 11.0.5.5 and Windows 7 64-bit. This issue just cropped up, previously everything was working fine. Any ideas?

Windows 7, Windows 7 64-bit

I'm with Eeyorefan12 that this is getting rediculous. If Apple is going to push a product for a certain operating system, they need to do some QA to ensure that it works out of the box on a majority of their users. If they don't want to support Windows, then do it and we'll all go somewhere else. If only I wasn't married to iTunes because of device limitations and protected product (legacy), I'd have jumped ship long ago. Apple, because of things like this, and not playing nice with others, I'm not replacing my older iPhone with a new one, and neither will my girlfriend - it's just not worth the games.

If the protected product you refer to is music, look into the Match option Apple offers. for <$30 you can sign up for match, delete all of your DRM protected stuff, redownload it in the newer high quality DRM-free format and then you are free to take your music collection elsewhere (don't forget to end your Match subscription)

If you want to find out which and how many songs you have that are DRMed, create a smart-playlist that looks for Kind contains "protected" Then you will be able to tell if the fee is worth it to unlock your stuff.

You have to uninstall all Apple software - include iTunes, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, Apple Application Support, and Bounjour (in that order). Close out all Apple processes that may be running, ensure temp files/common files have been dumped. Reboot and reinstall.

i did all that , went thru everything, got rid of it all, tried to download itunes, same result, i click download, the page comes up thanking me for downloading itunes, yet i never got that box  asking me if i want to run or save file, so irritating, i know its not my computer,it was running like a champ before the itunes update, everything ELSE is functioning perfectly. are there any other thoughts to this dilema ? thank you for suggesting  the temp files i had not thought of that , unfortunately , it didn't change the outcome.

This is how I fixed my issue on my desktop under Windows 7 64bit

    • Goto Uninstall Program
    • Sort by publisher
    • Uninstall all Apple Inc. programs that let you except "Apple Software Update"
    • Re-start computer
    • Run "Apple Software Update"
    • Select itunes to download and install

Hope this works for you too

I spent ALL DAY yesterday following Apple's instructions on uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and all components on my Windows 7 64-bit machine. I followed the intructions to the letter and yet the same issues exist: "iTunes has stopped working". Crash.

And, if by some miracle I do get in, my music plays with a digital skipping sound. I had no issues with the previous version, just this one and it started the moment I updated.

Needless to say this is annoying!

why do i need to bother copying and pasting things like files from where i dont know i just want an update from apple to sort the prolblem out. They need to spend some money on sorting there products out rather than new products like a new iphone 6 when i cant sync  an iphone 4 because itunes stops working.

Unfortunately when a software update goes bad it tends to need a hands-on approach to sort it out. Waiting for the next update to come out to fix it doesn't work.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

It hasn't worked for you, which is not to say that it might not help others.

The underlying cause of your problems might be different, but a workaround that seems to be helping some people with similar symptoms is to open iTunes in safe mode by holding down CTRL+SHIFT as you launch iTunes, then going into Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. If you close iTunes and reopen you may find that it now behaves normally.

    Hello tt2,

Thanks for the reply, but that didn't work, either. Any other tricks up the sleeve? This is highly, highly annoying.
