Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

    Chelsealinaeve,

Does the replacement machine you received only have the integrated GPU, or also discrete GPU?  From what I see on the current specs, the 2GHz model does not have a discrete GPU.

    Bellorz-

What kind of Apple logic is that?!

So we changed the tires on your car first, then came back and did an oil change and finally replaced the windshield wipers. That is the reason why the tires are bald.

They are supposed to bench test the machine before returning it. Plain and simple.

    From my prior post:

I have decided to bite the bullet and take my 17" Late 2011 MBP in for the Logic Board "repair" and I've told everyone working my case that I do it under extreme protest.

    Way to go Apple...

Yesterday, I partnered with the Admin Genius at the Apple Store to ensure that my machine would go out to depot repair that same day. He shook my hand and said "it's in good hands."

Guess what?!  They never shipped it!  It's still sitting at the Apple Store 28 hours later and that guarantees an extra day without getting work done.

    Grrrrrrr....

From Madrid, Spain, I´m having problems with my MBP 2011 15" i7 with AMD 6490M since one month (aprox). Searching for a solution i found this thread... Usual problems are: white screen at boot, screen splited in two sometimes, while i´m working (audio), and sometimes also blue screen while i´m working... I needed to restart many times...

I Have a later model 2011 as well. Blue screen crash and will no longer boot normally.

Apple store would not take the computer even though I have paid for the extended warrenty and it is still covered. They are sending me a mail back box...looks like that is going to take at least 2 days before i even get that.

It was even worse than that. I made a appointment with the local store for the laptop. I had a flat on the way and called them to request moving the appoitntment to later in the day so I could get my car towed and then finally go to the store(no spare tire makes for a bad day). Well I get to the store and they said the reservation  was posted for a phone not the laptop. They agreed my orignal appointment was schedule for the laptop but the new one was for a phone.

They would not see me and they would not let me leave the laptop for repair. Uterly useless!!!

I am a huge apple fan and have lots of their stuff but customer service like this is what starts a trend in the wrong direction. I only hope this was an isolated case but it is sounding like it is not.

I had the logic board of my late 2011 17" MBP replaced two weeks ago on my own dime.  The problem just returned a few hours ago.  I am going to take it to the local Apple store asking for another logic board replacement.

Observing so many repeated failures in this discussion thread, I wonder if they use refurished logic boards rather than brand new ones.

If this problem goes on for ahwile, is there a policy in Apple that allows me to trade in my MBP for a new one?  I expect to pay the price difference.

I have a gut feeling they're refurbished. Being that the model is out of production i doubt they have any new logic boards lying around. Would explain the repeated failures.

This means it's a total lottery when you decide to dish out money to change the logic board. You may use it for an extended time (I mean past the 90  days warranty), or not...

Yet another deceptive trick from Apple, or not...

Unfortunately, no, Apple doesn't have such a program.

If they did, I would be that a lot of folks here would have taken advantage of it!

My early 2011 MBP crapped out on me this saturday. I was watching a video on Youtube (not even in HD), and when I tried to open Photoshop the laptop froze with a sounding loop. I had to power down by holding the power button down until it would shut down. After that it won't boot. I get only a grey screen. Resetting SMC and PRAM did nothing. Starting up in Safe Mode is useless. Even Single User mode is useless (the screen there is blue with white text - is that normal?). If I boot up holding down the alt/option key and then selecting the Recovery partition eventually leads me to a blue screen with vertical lines. I have tried everything. Only thing that's left is taking it back to the store, but I fear they will ignore any pleas and make me pay for a replacement logic board, which is already well documented to be defective.

My MBP is out of warranty, but the consumer law in Denmark is a joke. Nothing is expected to last more than 2 years. Wish I lived in UK.

Apple, please take your customers serious. We just want our laptops to work as we was expecting them too do. I don't even want any of your new Macs. I, and thousands other, just want you to take responsibilty and fix this.

By the way, isn't it "interesting" how the new macbooks no longer have the AMD graphic chips? Why change them if there was nothing wrong?

Well I got my return box today after all.

That was a one day delivery on the box so I have to give credit for the fast delivery of the return box.

    Thanks.

But i already upgraded to 10.10 DP1, Run Photoshop, Movist etc, uptime 14:45, no problem.

In contrast, My 2011 Early 15' MBP Run Photoshop in 10.9.X must be freeze.

    mcdawang,

As far as I know, 10.10 has not been released as a public seed, only as a Developer's Preview and, as such, should be under the same non-discloser policy as the rest of the Developer's goodies. If you feel that you must talk about it, please restrict you conversations to the Mac Dev forums.

    Clinton
