Q: Software Update Service - Waiting

I am running server 3 on a Mac Mini just updated to 10.9.2. The software update service shows a list of updates all tagged with the status "Waiting...". This has been the case for about 3 weeks now, the list just keeps growing.

I do not know what has changed, this used to work. I have tried a few time to replace the configuration files and plist for the service as detailed in this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5305#!). The list of updates is getting updated, it is now showing the latest 10.9.2 updates, but nothing gets downloaded.

Any hints would be welcome.

Have you checked Console for sw_syncupd messages?

From what I see, the software update server won't intrude on the last 20% of space on the boot drive, so even if it looks like you have plenty of space to download some updates, the server will refuse to (and not say why in the Server.app window) if you have less than 20% of the total drive space remaining.

That was the problem. I have a mini with a 500GB drive. I have now moved the service data to another drive and that solved the problem. In my case, the service data is using about 180GB on the external drive.

Moving all this data, I was expecting to see the free space increase on my startup server drive, but that has not really happened. A topic for another day.
