Jun 4, 2014 6:30 PM in response to jhwatts34955by avpimblesr,I had the same problem. The screen went dark on my iPhone, and the power button hasn't worked in a year. When this happened with my Android phone, I just removed and replaced the battery. Since I could not do the same with my iPhone, I thought that I would have to trash it. So I put the phone in a ziplock bag (to help protect it from condensation in case this actually fixed the problem) and stuck it in the freezer, hoping to kill the charge on its battery. I had no other way to drain the battery.
Remember, I thought that I would have to trash the phone - I was not about to pay for the repair of a 2+ year old phone with 2 problems. When I removed it from the freezer more than an hour later (I did not time it), I pressed the Home button and nothing happened. When I plugged in the charger, the battery indicator came on and indicated that the battery was empty. About 1 minute later it started right up. It worked fine for about 2 weeks, until I tried to use an app I had not used since the phone went bad. The app locked my phone again. I will be deleting this app after I remove my phone from the freezer.

Aug 13, 2014 6:16 AM in response to tiffanyskoby AmishCake,You damaged something internally when you dropped it. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have it evaluated.

Aug 16, 2014 3:01 PM in response to brianna239by BrendanBreslau,I had to go to the apple genius bar and pay the money for them to figure it out. I guess something was damaged due to dropping it. I have had hard plastic cases on my iphones, but I guess that wasn't enough. The guy at the genius bar suggested a more "robust case". I walked away with an OtterBox Case. It's true that you loose a little bit of the sexy natural feel of the phone with an OtterBox, but I just don't have the funds to pay for fixing my phone every year or two.
iPhone 5S Case - OtterBox Commuter Series
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link

Oct 11, 2014 7:52 AM in response to brianna239by tfoster91,I've had this happen a couple of times on my 4s. The power/home button solution probably would have worked (should have read this earlier). It's not that the screen is dead but the backlight is turned off. To fix it, I hooked the phone to my PC and iTunes then prompted me to update the phone software. I had to accept the connection on the phone which was a bit tricky without a visible screen but if you touch the screen all over, eventually you will get lucky and accept the connection. As soon as the update starts, the screen will come back on. Let it complete and everything's back to normal.
This should work for the people with broken power buttons.
