I don't know exactly how long  it runs, I would say several minutes -- more than five.   The drive is 2 TB and is about half full.   No console messages.

It's a bug in Disk Utility that started with Mavericks.  When verifying the startup drive it often omits (or sometimes duplicates) messages, so it often never shows the verification complete message.

Run Disk Utility from the Recovery partition (hold the Option key while booting) to properly verify the startup drive.

When I run Disk Utility from the Recovery Partition it verifys that the starup volume appears to be OK.   However, there were a large number of permissions that needed to be repaired.

I don't know if the problem if the problem is solved!   Will let you know when I verify the startup volume again.

    Thanks for your help.

Repair Permissions may complain of no problems to hundreds of problems. These may appear to be resolved or they may recur the next time it is run. All is normal.

You only need to be alarmed if a permissions repair issue is highlighted in RED.

You don't need to use the Recovery partition to verify or repair permissions.  Just use Repair Permissions in the normal Disk Utility.  Don't bother with Verify Permissions; use Repair Permissions.  It may show lots of errors the firsr time.  Run it again and there should be just a few.  These are usually can be ignored.
