Q: Selection keeps getting lost

I just started using Aperture and I am befuddled.  I'm working in a library that was originally created by iPhoto but was exported by Aperture, in case that's relevant.  What I'm seeing is that every time I try to do a "pick" in a stack, the selection gets reset.  It doesn't matter whether I use the keyboard shortcut or the menu.  The browser scrolls back to the beginning of my library and suddenly the first four images are selected.  Always.

The same weird thing happens if I have a search filter applied.  I hit clear on the search filter and suddenly the selection is reset.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?  It just seems completely weird to me.

Repair your database.  If the problem persists, delete your prefs.

Details are on Apple's Aperture trouble-shooting page.

As always, never use a computer file without having a back-up.

Aperture and iPhoto share a common file format.  What do you mean when you say "created by iPhoto but was exported by Aperture"?

Sorry, that was ambiguous.  I don't know if it's relevant, but here's what I meant.  I started with an iPhoto library that has been through several generations of iPhoto.  I opened that library with Aperture, selected a single project (iPhoto "event") that was originally imported by iPhoto, and exported that as a new library.  Then I put that library on a portable drive so I could work on it on my laptop.

An interesting thing happened when I repaired the database: I got a warning that the database had been opened by a newer version of Aperture.  The only version of Aperture I have ever had is the latest and greatest 3.5.1.  Since I had a backup, I went ahead with the repair.

Repairing the database seems to have fixed the problem, but the experience has left me a little bit leery about Aperture.  I'm guessing I might want to run a repair on the original full library (with a full backup, of course).

Have you ever switched between Aperture and iPhoto for this exported library? When you rebuild an Aperture library in iPhoto, the version number will change from 3.5.1 to 9.5.1, iPhoto's last version number. If that happens, rebuild the library with the application that you are going to use in future, to get consistent version numbers.

I think I opened the library in iPhoto, but I don't think I rebuilt it.  Maybe just opening it was enough to change the version number.

Rebuild seems to be a longer and riskier operation than repair.  I'm not sure I want to do it unless it's necessary.  I can live with the repair warning as long as eveything is working right.  After all, you're supposed to be able to switch back and forth between iPhoto and Aperture on the same library.

Neither is as risky as continuing to use a Library that needs to be repaired or rebuilt.  I repair all Libraries as part of regular maintenance, and rebuild as needed.  I have never had anything go wrong during repair or rebuild.  (I don't recommend "rebuild" as part of regular maintenance.)

As long as you have copies of your Library, you have nothing to lose.
