Q: Audio popping and crackling problems across the board with Mavericks

I have a mid-2012 Macbook air.

Is anyone else having popping and crackling issues with Audio after upgrading to Mavericks? (I have read through various discussions but haven't seen this particular issue)  Note: popping and crackling is not present when playing audio with Quicktime.

Audio is popping and crackling.  I'm a musician and DJ and this is terribly impacting my business . . . This includes when played on Youtube, in iTunes, on Djay, Serato DJ, flash, any audio.

It doesn't matter is I am playing audio through a USB mixer, through headphones, internal speakers, audio jack to speakers, DJ console.  All of the above snap crackle and pop.  I have tried the following:

1. Turing off wifi

2. Restarting

3. removing playlist files (.plst) from /Library/Preferences/Audio

4. shutting down all unused applications

I sure hope there's a new update coming out soon . . . any ideas?

I just put Audio Midi Setup app in my dock, and when the issue begins, I just hop in, make the change to 48000.0Hz and it fixes it. It seems to be happening less lately, but I swap between outputs a lot, and that tends to exacerbate the situation.

There are several threads on this  issue. I also find that audio from Preview panes in Finder are fine, but QuickTime Player X is terrible. As others have noted, QuickTime Player 7 is fine. Different apps exhibit the problem to different degrees.

It's not the Fusion Drive, which did have an audio problem early on.

I can only encourage people to submit feedback or bug reports to Apple. (Posting here does not count.)

This issue is incredibly annoying. I can't listen to my music the way I want to, I have to lower the volume to a whisper for the crackling to go away. I have tried all the "solutions" posted here, nothing seems to work.

Changing to 9600 fixed my issue as well.

I have been struggling with this very issue on a USB Plantronics 655 headset that my employer gave us for Lync calls. I am running a new mac mini with Mavericks 10.9.4.  I found out that unplugging and replugging back in the headset corrected it but it would still come back after a while. I also found that toggling the selected output device back to internal speakers and back to the headset fixed it temporarily as well. It was still very frustrating that it kept coming back though.

After reading the posts here I went in to the MIDI Setup and began poking around. I looked at the help and under aggregate device settings it says that the sampling rate for all your devices has to be the same. My Plantronics 655 headset was set to 44.1kHz  and 2ch - 16 bit integer, and it could not be changed. The built-in input and output devices were both set to 2ch - 24 bit integer. I set the built-in input and output devices to the same setting as the headset. After a while the problem returned yet again. I then tried muting both the built in devices in the MIDI set up app and it has been over 24 hours without the problem coming back.

I had this problem, and the solution was turning off the Equaliser.
