Q: User Template can't be opened

I found a User Template folder in my hd with a red circle with a dash in it.  It's the only folder that has this.  When I click on it, it

says it can't be opened because I don't have permission to see its contents.  What's so secret that I can't see what's on my

own computer?  I asked a friend with the same operating system to check their hd library folder.  They don't have this file.

I just tried to download Macports--does it have to do with that?  Or is it some sort of malware?  thanks.

That's the default home folder for newly-created user accounts and is installed with Mac OS X.

A continuation of the above.  This is really odd.  I put the folder in the trash.  Then I decided to put it back.  When I put it back in the library, it mysteriously lost its red circle with dash and I could open it.  Inside is a file labeled pt_PT.lproj.  Inside are three files: Documents, Downloads and Library.  In Documents is Piha de documentos, an Apple-looking document in Spanish.  Same with Downloads.  Library contains a file FontCollections which is also in Spanish.  What a strange file.  Does anybody know what this is?

As stated above, it's the default home folder for newly-created user accounts. What you're looking at is the Portugese version of the About Stacks document.

How would a newly-created user account jibe with what's in this folder (as I describe) and put screenshots.  Why wouldn't I be able to see what's in a newly-created user account?  And why, suddenly, does this file open, when it didn't before I drug it to the trash?

    1. If Portugese is chosen as the default language for it, those files will be in its home folder.

    2. You can, by logging into it.

Why is the Portugese version of the About Stacks (Gimp?) in my Newly-Created User Accounts folder?  What's supposed to be in this folder and why can't I open it--or couldn't open it?

    1. Because Apple chose to put that file in the default home folder.

    2. Default home folders for all the languages bundled with Mac OS X.

    3. Apple chose to have its permissions set so that only the root user could access it; this is likely because some system component or the distribution of items inside it wouldn't work properly otherwise.

    1.  What's a Portugese file doing in a folder labeled New User Template?

    3.  If that's the case, then why doesn't my friend who is using the same operating system have the same folder?

    1. Because it's part of the default Portugese home folder the same way the About Stacks document is part of an English one.

    3. It's normally located in the /System/Library/ folder. If someone looks at a different library, it won't be there.

    1.  I don't speak Portugese, don't need a Portugese home folder and this doesn't answer my question.

    3.  There is no User Template folder in the Library folder of the Systems folder.  Should I drag it into the Library folder of the Systems folder?

I just noticed that there are now two: one with the Portugese docs in the Library folder of the hd, where I originally found it, and one with the red circle and dash in the hd where I dragged it out of the trash before I put it back into the Library file.  The folder with the Portugese documents doesn't seem to be the appropriate contents of a User Template file, so should I put it in the trash and drag the file with the red circle into the Library folder of the System file?

I put it in the trash and brought it out, used password and it worked!
