Q: Anyone seen this odd screen behavior with Mavericks?

I have multiple users on my computer. This behavior only occurs for the second and third active users.  It does not occur for the first user logged in.

Immediately after hitting enter on the login selection screen the display partially fills in with the user desktop using the top left 3/4 of the display. Almost immediately afterwords the full screen is used but the finder windows are now relocated to the top left. The first image shows partial screen draw, the second the relocated windows.

The windows were originally centered. It appears the initially shortened screen may be causing the window relocation.

If I switch to the first user and then back to the second user the problem repeats. If I logon a third user the problem repeats. If I logoff both users and reverse the order of the logon the problem again repeats with the second and third users.

This began a few days ago but I've had Mavericks installed for a couple of months. I’ve tried restart, power down reboot, reset NVRAM, power down and unplug AC power cord for 10+ seconds to reset SMC. Also, tried booting from different HD.

This screen behavior does happen whan booted to either Mavericks 9.2 and 9.3. This does not happen when booted from either Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is occuring on a 2008 quad Mac Pro 3,1 with a 23 inch Cinema Display, factory installed GeForce 8800 GT graphs card, and 20 gig of memory.

Tried your safe boot suggestion. It is inconclusive as safe boot will not allow more than one user to be logged on at a time.

This is a known bug in Mavericks which was not resolved through version 10.9.3 for many that use fast user switching. I would suggest not spending much more time with it and see if perhaps it's been addressed in 10.9.4 or 10.9.5.

MadMacs0, I agree with your suggestion. The most recent time I encountered it I was not able to fix it with OnyX as I had previously. It does not seem to have any negative effect other than pushing windows around. It seems that it does not occur if I only have one user active at a time. I think I'll restrict myself to one user active at a time until it is fixed.

Thanks everyone for your advice and comments.

I've had similar problems, as well, but only recently. After switching users or switching between users from the Login Window, application windows "snap" to the upper left of the screen and shrink to about 1/2 their original height. This has happened on and off with other user accounts on this iMac running the latest Mavericks OS. I tried all of the above mentioned "fixes" and none have worked. I think I've found a fix that works (at least it just worked for me). I just re-installed the 10.9.4 Combo OSX Updater, logged into the first user, deleted the Finder prefs and opened a couple of apps. I switched to the Login Window and back and the app windows were where I left them. I then logged into another user, opened some apps and switched back to the first user. All the open windows were as they should be. I switched back to the other user and those windows were also where they should be. I don't think trashing the Finder prefs would have made the difference, but reinstalling the system updater seemed to do the trick. I hope this helps others.
