Q: How to add accent mark above Russian vowel?

I have the keyboard set to Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet. I need to add an accent mark above the vowel to indicate which syllable is accented. This is commonly found in Russian dictionaries and texbooks, but I can't find any way to do it on my Mac in either Word, Pages, or TextEdit.

I found a way to do it using character viewer: Go to the gear wheel at the top left and select Customize, then check the box for Unicode, then in Unicode go to range 00000300 Combining Diacritic Marks and select 0301 Combining Acute.  Drag/drop or double click after the base letter to add it to your Cyrillic.

BUT, NOW, I would like to create a keyboard shortcut for doing the above. I tried using System Preferences > Keyboard, Text Replacement, but it doesn't work.

What happened to the symbol replacement checkbox in the Text Replacement window in Mavericks?

BTW, Meg, the keyboard shortcut you mentioned doesn't work for Russian vowels.

Your shortcut must have two characters in it.  Did you try that?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't seem to work. Not with the accent symbol

Ok, I found a solution: with TextEdit, use the System preferences text substitution using any little used symbol, such as %.

System preferences text substitution doesn't seem to work for Word, however.

    Easy work-around:

In Word, use their autocorrect. Same thing.

This is for anyone who, like me, has exhausted every other options for adding accent marks in Russian.

-If you're like me you tried both the Russian and Russian -phonetic keyboards.  This doesn't work.

-You perhaps tried holding a key down and waiting for a popup menu of accents.  This doesn't work with the Russian keyboard layout.

-Maybe you tried the Show Character Viewer--and this isn't adequate either.

-Another option is to download the ER_Bukinist_KOI-8 font.  It doesn't do the trick.

    Eventually I found this: http://ask.metafilter.com/248193/How-can-I-type-stress-marks-on-Mac-OS-using-the -Russian-keyboard

Follow the instructions to the letter, no pun intended, and it should work.  It took me about 3 hours to finally find this solution.

I hope Apple fixes their Russian keyboard in a new update.

    -Regards

You don't seem to have tried the option which Arandel developed in this discussion -- creating a simple text substitution entry so you can create a combining acute accent whenever you want.  Did that not work for you?

Another discussion of this is here at

Acute accent for Russian Cyrillic Keyboard

You can ask Apple for what you want via

    http://www.apple.com/feedback

but I doubt they will ever do this, unless you can perhaps show it is a standard feature somewhere else like Windows.

Thank you! I'd been searching everywhere for answers on a similar question, and was getting lots of "Well you could try this" that didn't work. You're a gentleperson and a scholar.
