Q: Permissions differ on Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources...

Hello,

When I use Disk Utility to verify Disk Permissions on Macintosh HD, I get about 1,500 lines displayed like

Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/Dutch.lproj/AACEncoderConfig.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x .

A few others are similar - only regarding Safari instead of iTunes.

Why is it so?

What does this mean?

Repairing Disk Permissions doesn't help.

What can I do to get rid of these messages?

Many thanks!

BTW Would this be the same under Mavericks?

If everything is working okay, ignore them.

Thanks, but I would prefer to make these messages disappear.

I don't think this is normal.

I would like to know the reason and correct it.

    Any idea?

    Hi,

    It's normal.

The reported errors are less in the latest versions of the OS but some do keeping showing up.

In Leopard the list of "regulars" is particularly long.

Debate has continued for some time as the value of Repairing Permissions and whether to do it "Live" from the Boot volume of from the Utilities in a CMD + R reboot.

For me, in Mavericks, a Safari item and a Installed printer item continue to show up.

I wouldn't care about two lines, but I have 1,500!!

And checking takes a lot of time - how long is your checking time?

    Hi,

I have not booted in to Mountain Lion for some time but I am aware that Mavericks is significantly quicker at about 10 mins.

I don't remember it being that many lines but then again apart from CS 3 and Photoshop Elements 6 and a couple of Utilities (TextExpander, Java, Flash, Flip4Mac) it is a relatively vanilla set up.

Now I've booted from my USB drive (with Mountain Lion on it) and run Repair Permissions of Macintosh HD from there. All 1500 issues have been repaired successfully!
