Q: iPod not recognised by windows iTunes

iPod not recognised by windows 8 computer.

 

After I recently updated iTunes I plugged my iPod Touch 4th Gen into my windows 8 desktop.

It was not recognised as an iPod by iTunes, only as a storage device in MS Windows.

 

After much searching I identified the problem was there was no apple mobile device USB driver installed.

I searched for … devmgmt.msc

Which opened the Device Manager

 

In Device Manager, under Portable devices, the Apple iPod should have been listed. It wasn’t.

So I Right Clicked on ‘Apple iPod’ and left clicked on ‘Update Driver Software’.

Then ‘Browse my computer for driver software’.

 

Browsed to this location … Windows (C) / Program files / Common Files / Apple / Mobile Device Support / Drivers /

And then clicked on ‘usbaapl64’

 

It installed the Apple mobile device USB Driver, as it should have done already, when I recently updated iTunes.

 

Could someone check the above to see if I have described the problem and the solution correctly.

I followed your instructions and it never shows the 'usbaapl64'.  Is there anything else I can do?

    Yes, that happens sometimes with the recent iTunes update.

    I have this same problem, I followed your directions and found 3 files with that name but 3 different descriptions: Securty Catalog, Setup Information, and System File.  I tried clicking on all three.  System file asks me what app I would like to use after warning me that I could do damage.  Further instructions? please

    I'm away from home right now, and on win 7 laptop, but I think that when you click on 'Update driver software', ... 'Have disk' .. and then browse to the correct folder (As above) ... then only one file will be visible, for you to select. It should then install properly.

     

    Sorry if this still doesn't work for you.

    I'm home at the weekend and will look on the same system I used above (posted 22 feb 2014) and provide better instructions, ... unless anyone else steps in and provides better instructions sooner. Anyone?

    OK, update to try to provide a clearer description of the problem and solution that worked for me.

    Problem.

    After I recently updated iTunes I plugged my iPod Touch 4th Gen into my windows 8 desktop. It was not recognised as an iPod by iTunes, only as a storage device in MS Windows. After much searching I identified that there was no Apple Mobile Device USB driver installed. Without the driver Windows did not recognise the Apple iPod when connected via USB.

     

    Solution.

    I needed to use the Windows Device Manager, so I searched for … devmgmt.msc (You need to include the .msc) and clicked on it, which opened the Device Manager in a new window.

    In Device Manager, under Portable devices, the Apple iPod should have been listed. It wasn’t.

     

    So I Right Clicked on: ‘Apple iPod’ and left clicked on: ‘Update Driver Software’.

    Then clicked on: ‘Browse my computer for driver software’.

    Then clicked on browse and drilled down to the following location on my hard drive:

    C:\Program files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers /

    And then clicked on ‘usbaapl64’

    This installed the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.

    Now Windows recognises my iPod again.

     

    PS. I can’t remember if I had to restart the computer once the device driver was installed. But if the above doesn’t work for you, then at the end, try restarting to see if that finishes the installation of the device driver. Good luck

    '... it never shows the usbaapl64'. My immediate thought is that the file may have been saved into a different directory when you last installed iTunes. So, you'll need to search your hard drive (Usually C:\) for the missing file.

     

    If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling iTunes, but I expect you already tried that.

     

    What files do show up in the following directory?

    C:\Program files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers\

    The usbaapl64 never showed up for me either, but I just click no folder it was suppose to be in and click next and IT WORKED!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

    Thank you for this. It solved my problem with my computer not recognizing my iPod.

     

    For future reference: I had 3 different usbaapl64 show up and I right clicked on the Setup Information one and then clicked Installed and that got the Apple Mobile Device USB to show up.

    TRied It but it didnt work. The other day I tried syncing my friend's older Shuffle and it worked. Could it be my USB cable maybe?

    I tried your suggestion but when I get to usbaapl64 and I click on it to install I get this message, 'INF file does not support this method of instillation'. So now I don't know what to do??

    I have an ipod 2nd gen and I cant get iTunes to recognize it. I mean it starts to restore and then throws an error code {1}. so wat do I need to do. im really frustuated plzz help. ty
