Q: itunes stops working for windows 7 64bit

Hello,

As the title says, I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 on my home computer. I am trying to run itunes but it always says "iTunes has stopped working". if necessary, i will upload a screenshot of it but that's all the information I get.

it occurs when:

  • exporting music to my ipod classic
  • adding music in the "automatically add to itunes" folder
  • adding music by drag and drop
  • every 30 seconds (without doing anything) - this number is an approximate, it may be less

I have tried the following things:

  • uninstalling and reinstalling
  • uninstalling and emptying my music folder, then reinstalling
  • clean uninstall (using a tool such as iobit uninstaller with Advanced System Care), then reinstalling
  • tried downloading again, in case the download corrupted the first time
  • looking up some registry stuff

my sound drivers work, so do other players like VLC and codecs like media player classic's codecs. i can confirm that itunes was one of the first programs to be installed on my computer so the codecs do not effect it. i am also running a server on here through my WLAN to my PS3 and all the music is playing on there. Consequently, I do not think there should be anything wrong with the codecs/drivers themselves.

i can't think of anything else to do, i am resorting to using my little netbook; which i'm trying to get rid of and import all my songs from, hence this being quite a predicament to be in.

This is a brand new computer and a brand new install, built it myself, so there shouldn't be any issues with the OS and i do not think it's wise if i reinstalled because i've already filled up about 2.5TB of stuff. It's going to take too much effort to transfer everything.

As a result, my biggest question is whether it can be fixed. if not, i will just wait till the end of the year when i purchase a macbook air. Of course, i do not want this outcome but if i have to then i'll settle with it.

As with all forum posts i send, my appreciation will go out to anyone who can help in this matter.

kind regards

hmmm, funny this. mine has just started working in the last 7 days. my iPod feels loved again!

I'm not sure what has happened because i haven't done anything to it. i have changed a few things on my router for some FTP stuff but that's got nothing to do with iTunes or even the network connectivity. I spent over a month studying so it definitely wasn't a user change that affected it. Not even an iTunes update ocurred on this thing.

P.S - mine was cauing problems before 10.6.1, i think it is irrespective of the version, but if this works then it's worth a shot for those who have not done it yet.

with regards to Danielle993's words about wifi, mine didn't seem to be relevent to that, as i was sometimes completely disconnected from any network and it still didn't work. i guess it's just a stroke of pure luck sometimes, even though that's not what they teach you in university lol.

for those still experiencing the problem, good luck!

I am also having problems with iTunes on Windows 7 x64, of a rather more severe kind: when iTunes is installed, my Windows 7 simply hangs during logon.

The only way to resolve that is to boot in safe mode and remove iTunes. Tried reinstalling several times, each time the same result.

I cannot find words for how displeased I am with a piece of software that prevents me from properly booting my computer. Even *if* there are bugs in iTunes, a piece of software should never ever prevent my OS from booting.

Please look into this. For the moment I'll just have to do without iTunes... which is sort of crazy, because I paid good money for an iPod and an iPhone which as a result I cannot administer now.

    Greetings,

    Molurus

i had the same problem on a Windows 7 laptop just now.  My fix?:  I uninstalled QuickTime.  When I went to start iTunes, it finally started up again.

I was having the same issue, new laptop with 64 bit Windows 7 installed. kept getting the same issue with itunes just closing. I had 32bit version of iTunes installed so I tried uninstalling, removing all apple related stuff, installed 64 bit version but was still getting the same issue (iTunes closing after about 1 min). Turns out I hadn't realised each time I opened it iTunes was trying to download a buggy podcast episode and each time it reached the end of that download it would shut iTunes down. Killed the download and iTunes happily stays open and will let me download other podcasts and have not had a repeat. Just thought I'd mention this, sometimes it can be annoying obvious things that can cause the problem and we never think of them.

I've had many issues on Win 7 64 bit with iTunes not working.. Resolved the latest time by unplugging my external hard drive. When it was powered up again iTunes opened as well. I have no idea why this happened but hope this helps someone else.

    • Click on the "Start" button. Click "Run." Type the word "cmd" in the open box. When the DOS screen comes up, type "netsh winsock reset." Press "Enter." Type "exit" to close the DOS window and go back to Windows.
    • Restart the computer.

Hi, I had the same issue. I'm running MS Server 2008.

I simply went and deleted all the Apple anything files I could find in

    C:\Users\lylej.HOMENET\AppData\local

    and

    C:\Users\lylej.HOMENET\AppData\Roaming.

Unfortunately you loose your entire iTunes syncing history, backups etc.

This may not be ideal for everyone but it certainly got the job done for me. iTunes launches without any issues for me now.

    Regards

    Lyle

After trying everything this thread mentions, I did some digging of my own and found a solution to this very annoying issue.

First off, completely uninstall itunes and all associated programs:

    Apple software update

    Apple device manager

    bonjour

    itunes

    quicktime

The next step was running a registry cleaner ( I used CC Cleaner)

Followed by running a disk defragmentation as well as disk cleanup.

After that, I located the common files folder containing apple files C/program files/common files

i deleted any apple related folders and files.

next i looked into the appdata folder, c/users/YOUR_USERNAME/appdata/

look in all the folders, (local, locallow, roaming) and delete any files related to apple or "apple computer"

***know that deleting the appdata portion will remove any device backups, so backup these folders if you want to play it safe***

after deleting that. i gave the machine a reboot, downloaded the latest version of itunes. and installed it under a DIFFERENT FOLDER PATH.

instead of installing in c/program files/itunes i created a new folder in the program files directory and named it "itunesreinstall"

I finished up the itunes install and DO NOT OPEN ITUNES AFTER INSTALLER IS DONE.

Then i proceeded by holding the shift key while double clicking the itunes icon, i created a new library file. (yes you lose your playlists etc. but not your itunes music etc.)

Once the new library was created. i had itunes scan the computer for music, it found all my existing music perfectly.

Now itunes works great. Doesnt crash when opening and doesnt crash when i load the itunes store. I havnt had the crashing problem since i did all this. Hope this helps anyone.

I was afflicted by this also, but my solultion was simple....

I had gone into my services and noticed Bonjour had been disable, I don't know why, but I simply changed it to auto and Presto it started functioning again.

to do this follow these instructions

    1. Open the Start Menu, type services.msc in the Search box, and highlight and press enter

    2. Find the Bonjour Service entry, highlight and right click, and select properties

    3. Goto the Startup type: and from drop down menu select Automatic, in right hand corner click Apply

    4. Then click where it says Start or simply restart your computer

    Hope this helps someone

The Bonjour Service (enable to automatic) did the trick.  Thanks for posting and saving me many more hours.  Hope you have some good karma coming...

Non of the steps mentioned here helped me but here is what I did to get ITunes to even launch again:

I have resolved the same issue by completely uninstalling all Apple software first.

Then I went into the (C:\user\username\appdata\local) and deleted the "apple computer" file.

I did the same apple computer file delete in (C:\user\username\appdata\roaming).

App Data isn't seen in most cases when you look in the user file.

If you click twice in the address bar, once you get into the user file,  you can add the (\appdata\local) to the end and do the same adding the (\appdata\roaming)

If one of the files gives you a "can't be deleted" message, go to start menu and type in (task manager) and hit enter.

When task manager comes up select the "processes" tab at the top, find the (APSDaemon.exe) process. Right click on it and select (end task). The apple computer file will then be able to be deleted.

So after trying uninstalling all Apple software and just reinstalling to no avail, uninstalling all apple software and deleting the apple computer files in the appdata then reinstalling ITunes....finally worked for me.

    Thanks,

    Brock

Do you have more than one user on your computer... Have you tried activating the hidden admin account and doing the same process I mentioned before?

If there is more than one user account for the computer you may have to delete the Apple Computer Files in the AppData file for every user.

Trying the process I mentioned  from the Hidden admin account might help.

To activate the hidden Admin account go to start menu type in (com) and look for command promt. Right click on it and select (run as administrator).

When command prompt comes up type in (net user administrator /active:yes) be sure to leave out the (  ) and put the spaces in the correct place then hit enter and it will spit back that it was successful. Then log out of your user and you will see a user named administrator. I recommend setting a password for the admin account at some point.

    good luck

Oh and be sure to go into control panel, programs and features, and delete anything that says it's made by apple before deleting the apple computer folders in appdata/local and appdata/roaming.

I can't remember if there might be one in appdata/local low...
