Jun 14, 2014 3:14 PM in response to stassiby Csound1,I think petermac is right in that updates for 10.9 are probably limited now and will appear in 10.10 instead. But it's quite possible that they will appear.

I really miss the Cat names...

Jun 14, 2014 6:31 PM in response to Tracy Eby abbelougee,I'm afraid that I can't tell from your image just how you're implementing tags and labels.
However, it's not hard. And, acknowledging that labels isn't likely to return in it's original form, setting up tags andn labels is well worth the little extra work involved.
Set up 'tags' with your old label names. Next, when you want to tag a file or folder, open the tag dialog, select 'no color' (X) and name your tag. This allows you to search for your tags -- as many as you want to set up -- but without the distraction of extra colored dots in the file name. Voila -- tags for deep searching, labels for instant recognition.
Or you could type your tags into the 'comments' box in Get Info.
Or you can use one of the several tagging apps available. For example, Tagit (from Ironic the people who brought us Yep and free), Punakea (from Nudgenudge software -- great names, app and company -- no longer being developed but the last build seems to work fine even on Mavericks although the interface could be a little more intuitive) and there are more.
I use system 1 -- I use colored 'tags' as lables, and add as many 'tags' as I need, all set to 'no color.'
And keep my fingers crossed that labels and tags will be separated in some upcoming iteration of OS X (silly me, I know). And don't forget -- although Save As returned in Mountain Lion, it was taken away again in Mavericks...

Option click on File in Menu.

Jun 14, 2014 6:45 PM in response to abbelougeeby petermac87,That's OK, some have not worked it out yet. Still not as convenient as it once was. Removing it previously was a silly move by Apple, in my opinion.

I am using Tags as implimented in Mavericks. I have installed XtraFinder to hilight tagged items with Label-like colors. The Label color is designated by the last color taged.

I love the idea of no-color tags. I will start using that right away!

Can you imagine the ongoing internal debate at Apple over Save As? Decisisions, reversed decisions, semi-reversed reversed decisions!
"Sir Jony, we must put Save As back!" "OK, but only if you make it a plecibo and hide it."

It is not a placebo. It actually functions as it should. It is just one more step to get there in some programs such as TextEdit. Many other such as Mail, Safari, Word, Adobe CS, etc. etc, have it there as default and no option click is required.

Jun 14, 2014 7:13 PM in response to petermac87by DABbio,Incidentally, while off topic, I have often wondered why there are no "Save and Close" or "Save As and Close" commands, in Word, the System, or elsewhere, to my knowledge, which is limited. Those commands would have saved me about umpteen thousand clicks during my lifetime. I trust that someone will direct me to the correct discussion if of no interest or have no information.

Hey, I didn't say it. Jony did.
Just kidding. Actually, I spend much of my time in FCPX which has no Save at all. I wish it had a placebo Save. I'm still not used to not constantly saving and just quitting and trusting that it happened (but it always does.)
Sorry to sidetrack the thread. Back to Label discussion...

Jun 14, 2014 10:24 PM in response to petermac87by stassi,I'm one of the ones who hadn't worked out where Save As... was. Guess I didn't try everything, and missed it - but not enough to look it up. Thanks for the good idea, dianeoforegon.
Also, I like abbellougee's implementation of tags with clear labels. I hadn't really thought of that either. I like the combo tag/label idea, and have been using multiple tags for searches - I was going through the PITA of trying to get them in the right order, so the "label" showed up correctly. Gonna switch them all to clear tomorrow.
Thanks for the ideas, guys!

We've used up the cats, and Mavericks is by far the best version of OSX (for me) very fast and very stable.
