Q: HDMI Output Failure on 2-Mini's After 10.9.3 Update

I have two separate (Late 2012, OS X 10.8) Mini's that are both (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) that have been hooked-up to identical Flanders Scientific professional HD monitors via HDMI cables from the computer output to HDMI / DVI adapters into the monitor input and they have worked flawlessly in that configuration since purchase in July of last year. THAT IS UNTIL, I made the stupid mistake of installing OS X 10.9.3 ---

I updated both Mini-A and Mini-B within a few minutes of eachother while they remained online and wired to the monitors in that identical configuration. Mini-A was the first to complete the download and install of 10.9.3 and when it rebooted, the display image did not return. Subsequently, a few minutes later, Mini-B completed the download, install and reboot with the identical result of missing display image.

Monitor info:

2 x Flanders Scientific LM-2140W, 1920x1080, 10 bit, switchable multi-input (2 x HD/SDI, YPbPr & RGB Component, 1 x SD/SDI, DVI-I / DVI-A / DVI-D switchable YPbPr / Limited RGB / Full RGB)

Needless to say, I have been fiddle-f***ing around trying to resolve the issue for more than a week to no avail. The HDMI output signal is no longer present on both computers and the only way to feed a signal to a monitor is now via the thunderbolt / mini-display port output using a Mini-Display Portt to DVI-I or DVI-D adapter at the computer to DVI cable into the monitor.

Troubleshooting Procedure included.

PRAM / NVRAM / SMC Reset (no change)

Alternate Cables (no change)

Alternate Monitors (no change)

Alternate Computers running OS X 10.8.5 via HDMI wiring schema as before (image on both monitors)

I'm no GENIUS, but I do have a modecum of experience with troubleshooting this kind of stuff and I am 100% confident that OS X 10.9.3 has caused this problem. Now, who wants to tell me how to fix it before my warranty runs out in 45 days.

Do you have a TV/monitor that you can plug HDMI to HDMI into for testing? If neither of the Mini's work like that, then your best to get them serviced before the warranty runs on.

If they do work, then at least you know the HDMI port works on them.

With the Mac that you can still use. Can you connect to those Macs via Screen Share? So that you can make some changes on the Display settings. Such as changing the refresh rate.

What do you see in the Display Preferences when you connect two monitors up to one Mac Mini...?

(one using the HDMI to DVI adapter and one using the Thunderbolt / Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter)

Asking because I have had two DVI monitors connected to my 2010 Mac Mini for quite awhile and never had a problem updating.

Only thing that I can think of that is different are the Graphic's Chips. I have a NVDIA GeForce 320M and if correct you have an Intel HD 4000.

Which might lead to a driver problem in the 10.9.3 update for the Intel HD 4000 and not the GeForce 320M.

    KOT,

Yes, I've done the HDMI / HDMI IO connection and neither mini is sending a signal out of the port. It's a real head scratcher...

I'm currently downgrading back to 10.8.5 on both of the units. I hope this will resolve the issue until someone engineers a fix. I currently have a single image stream from both mini's via the thunderbolt / MDP port so I can cycle the scan rate to test...

Yeah both of these units are running the intel 4000... My guess is that the drivers in 10.9.3 are F'd up... somebody overlooked something, somewhere... I've been on the Intel Forum looking for answers and I gotta tell ya, that graphics card has been having various problems since it's introduction... Thank God I have a NVIDEA GeForce in my other computer.

Thanks, for both reply's... I'll let you know what I discover...

I wanted to mention that we have this issue as well.  Mac Mini 2011 model.  Using this unit in one of our conference rooms, connected to a Denon AV receiver.  HDMI and DisplayPort out has the same HDMI handshake issue.  This occurred only after updating to 10.9.3.  I should mention that we have two of the 2012 model Mini's running in two of our other conference rooms and this issue is not a problem.

So to be clear, this issue occurs on any input with the Denon Receiver.  Occurs from both HDMI out and MiniDisplay Port out.  Goes away when we reinstall the OS and update it to 10.9.2.  Comes back as soon as we update to 10.9.3.

    Cheers

    Another thing to try:

Get a Thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor (they cost pennies) and see if you get an HDMI signal that way.

"Occurs from both HDMI out and MiniDisplay Port out"  That is the Thunderbolt to HDMI.  Occurs on both.

    Thx

    Another suggestion.

Since you say you have access to other Macs running 10.8.5, trying cloning one of those macs to the Mac Mini (after backing up the Mac Mini of course) and see if the problem still occurs.

Have you been able to use the Mac Mini directly attached to the plasma/LCD/projector with out going through the Denon AVR? Even with 10.9.3 installed?

I have a Pioneer AVR and I have the Mac attached via a HDMI to HDMI and all is working for me. Can your Denon do some upscaling? Some AVR, like my VSX-53 can change the scaling of the input video. Meaning if I still had my Apple TV 2 which outputs 720P only, can be upscaled in my AVR to 1080i or 1080P or even 24fps. Heck, I could even plug in an old style Red, White, Yellow cable and upscale it to 1080P and output it HDMI.

I am wondering if your Denon is able to do that and it might be set wrong. Check the owners manual for such settings. Even the plasma/LCD/project could be doing the upscaling too. So check that too.

Anyone try the 10.9.5 update yet?  I am scared to do it.  Do not want to re-image the unit.

Yes, I just updated to 10.9.5 and now my HDMI to DVI adapter will not display, it recognizes the connection then the monitor goes to sleep.  I have had it work on 2 different occasions but with no rhyme or reason.

I read that others are experiencing the same issue on 10.10.  Can anyone else speak to that?
