Jun 13, 2014 10:29 PM in response to LarryHNby glo1man,software installed and yes management was set up to sleep in 30 min... But seems the mac is not pointed in the right direction. upon launching iphoto it takes a while (beach ball) then it asks which device and I pont it to the WD and it sees no documents . yet when I do your Comm i its showing 384 g used holding Iphoto...
This software now is also using my WD passport as a back up . I will try and stop that option as well. I only want iphoto to launch my pictures from the WD... I have another drive doing Time Cap.
any help would be very much appreciated!

Jun 15, 2014 1:07 AM in response to glo1manby glo1man,update .
Genius bar plugged me in and showed me that the library was still there but the missing thumbnails are still an issue.
Basically told me
1. 50K pictures are to much for a core 2 duo to handle thru iphoto.
should get a more updated mac.
2. Aperature may be a better choice but cant promise me if it will handle well on my 2006 imac.
3. told me to try and create new seperate libraries of no more than 9k pictures...
My thoughts:
So I am copying Library to a seagate 320 G drive I had and will then uninstall the WD software mang system.
looking for a larger HD maybe 4TB to hold my new broken up library.
Going to start using iphoto with new family picture I take from now on from my internal HD ... running time machine
got so many memories & family milestone.
any suggestions?
Thanks to All!

Jun 15, 2014 1:40 AM in response to glo1manby léonie,★HelpfulYour genius has a lot to learn!
Get a drive with the correct formatting MacOS Extended (Journaled) and without any disk management software installed and move your iPhoto library over.
With a new large drive there is no necessity at all to split your library. The library size does not matter - you are far from the limit (250 00 photos for older iPhotos, 1 000 000 for the current version).
Dividing it up will make it hard to search for your photos, since you can only open one library at a time.
Make sure, your new drive will be included in your backups.

Thanks for making me laugh at 5 :20 am... going to do exactly that.. will report back soon.
LOL... Thank you for the words of wisdom!
OK...
1. completely uninstall of WDigitals software.
2. draged the iphoto library to another external that is also jounaled correctly.
Iphoto starts right up and thumbnails are still missing yet I double click on any photo and its there!
FYI : I ran photo sweeper looking for duplicates, and within seconds of my draging the iphoto library into Photosweeper then pressing scan whala!!! all pictures show up showing themselves competely. no missing spots. I scroll down all 50K pictures that where scanned by photo sweeper and they are all visible. Do no know whats going on with my iphoto and theumbnails.
Do I burn the pictures to a cd and trash Iphoto and import them again?
Do I try the rebuild thumbnail and or Database again?
I am not giving up so easy,,, especially after learning that 250K is my limit>>>

What is the state of your library now on that other external drive - I am a bit confused.
- You wrote "Iphoto starts right up and thumbnails are still missing yet I double click on any photo and its there!". That is good - it means, that the original image files are there and connected to the thumbs in the browser.
- Try all repair/rebuild options, starting with repairing permissions.
- If the built-in repair options don't suffice, rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager.
Is this copy on your external now the only copy of your iPhoto library you have? Don't do a "Rebuild" without making a second copy first.
