Q: Will X handle 4k from a GH4?

I'm a video pro and long-time FCP7 user and currently limping along with my HMC-150 AVCHD camcorder.  But the writing's on the wall that 4k is the next big thang that the mfgr's are pushing.  So, if I buy a Panasonic GH4 and shoot 4k will I be able to edit it with FCP7?  iMovie?  X?  Have most pros already made the transition to X?  Will X mark the 4k spot?  Will my Mac Pro dual 2.8 be enough macheen to crunch through the encoding?

Mac Pro (Early 2008), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), FCP7

FCPX is up to it. Whether your system is, I don't know. A lot will depend on your graphois card.

As fir FCP 7, you're better off posting in the Final Cut Studio ASC forum, but this doc on RED workflow will be similar to you'll need

here's my thread from another forum, performing a real stunt:

    4k-Multicam with a MacMini? Why not ....!

    my mini raid_sm.jpg

believe it or not: my brave lil' MacMini handles 4k-multicam ... more or less, at last

fundamentally, the trick lies in 'optimized/proxy' and a fast ext. drive (here: my <100€-raid0) ..

... no idea, if FC/p7 works with such a beast of hardware...

I have 3 students editing with FCPX 10.1 from GH4 cameras.  They love it.  Your storage will be the biggest factor.  Since you have a Mac Pro, get a pair of 2TB or 4TB Drives in it as your media drives, and you should be OK.  Beef up to the best GPU you can put in it.  Technically it "will" edit 4K, just a matter of system peformance.

Check this thread on the subject.

    FCP X will handle 4K.

As already mentioned it's more about your machine.

My G7 footage runs at 100 Mbps and does tax my Macbook Pro 8,3 but it works just fine.

GH4 can be set to 200 Mbps so your machine needs up to the task depending on camera settings.

BTW: You will need appropriate fast memory cards for the camera to record 4K successfully.

    Factor them into your purchasing.
