Q: How can I receive text messages through car bluetooth?

I make and receive calls with my iPhone 5 through my car bluetooth stereo system. My texts messages, however, do not display. (They did with my old flip phone.) I have searched for the way to turn this feature on, but no luck. Would appreciate instructions on how to turn this feature on.

Turn off your phone and don't text or read texts when driving.  Doing so is truly moronic and iPhones don't support it.

Modular747: Let me clarify. I do not text and drive. It is unsafe and aganist the law. I see that I must explain that the bluetooth capabilty allows you to make calls and receive texts, hands free. With my previous phone, when a text came through it was read to me through the speakers in the car. Phone remains in my bag; no need to touch it. This is the feature that I would like to access with my iPhone.

Tell Siri "Messages" to read your new messages.

You can also ask Siri to compose it for you.

    I think that's good enough.

Both devices, the iPhone and the car need to support MAP, Message Access Profile. iPhone 4 and later are supposed to support it, however the bluetooth profile in the vehicle may need to be updated. The old phone may have accessed it differently, but this is the profile that allows for messaging. Check this support document for further information http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3647 The vehicle radio manufacturer would need to check to make sure they are compatible.

My Jeep and iPhone bith support MAP but it still does not work for text messages.  Is Uconnect not compatable with the iPhone?  Any ideas would greatly help...

I've read a lot about Uconnect. You might want to check to the right of this thread under More Like This. And also check with the Jeep dealer and see if there is a firmware update for your vehicle and radio system.

Its very simple to do on iphone 4 and 5. To turn the text feature on first connect your device via bluetooth to your car's compatible multimedia centre as you would do normally to make hands free calls. Then on your iphone go to your bluetooth settings, select the connection for your car, click the blue circle exclamation point and the select "Show Notification" by toggling it on. Very simple! Not sure why all the convoluted answers in this forum! Hope this helps!

They are not convoluted answers because not all automobile Bluetooth systems support text messaging. If yours does then more power to you.

This doesn't work for me - there isn't an option for "Show Notification" when my phone is connected to my Fiscon Bluetooth system.

THANK-YOU.........Been driving me and others nuts.............Your the only one with the answer. Works great.  FYI ....you do not have to connect to vehicle, I just went into Bluetooth settings on iPhone and clicked the "i" icon next to Uconnect (Dodge system) under devices then toggled the "Show Notification"  Thanks again...........

Maybe not having the notifications enabled was my problem the whole time! I'm so glad unchecked this out.

I am glad it helped the folks that just needed a simple straight answer to the question that was asked. Folks on this forum like to jump to the complicated answers right away which only apply to the exceptions not realizing mose people who come on this forum are the average user looking for guidance like @ChrisJ4203 provided which has not helped a single sole. I see this common issue (getting very complicated very fast) in many forums intead of starting with the basic fundamental of just asking the question that was asked. Keep the answers for the users simple folks not everyone is a technical geek.

I'm not sure why you found it necessary to personally attack my answer when the information that I provided was accurate. While the Bluetooth profile of the iPhone does support MAP, not all vehicle Bluetooth systems support it. Because of that, not all people will be able to receive text messages in the vehicle, which is what the original question was.

@ChrisJ4203 a snurky response deserved a snurky reply. So how many people found your answer helpful at the end of the day? The vast majority who want this feature and are smart enough that their vehilces have to be compatible and are just looking to see how to simply turn on a feature on their phone to use it. Most forum confuse people rather than help them. Let's stick to helping people first and answer the basics before answering something that applies to a smaller population asking the quesiton.
