Photos for MacWhat version of [Mac] OS X are you running?
For systems up to 10.8, iTunes could be used to sync calendars with an iPhone via USB connection.
Starting in 10.7, Apple introduced iCloud, which includes calendar syncing.
In 10.9, Apple disabled iTunes calendar syncing, but they brought it back in 10.9.3 and the latest iTunes.

Jun 15, 2014 10:14 PM in response to markwmsnby Great White Hunter,Thanks for your response mark. The Mac Book Pro is new this year running 10.9.2 and the iPhone is a 4S. What I am hoping to find are step by step instructions to sync the iphone and Macbook calendars? I have an iCloud account where do I go? Thanks GWH

Photos for MacAre both the MacBook Pro and the iPhone signed into iCloud (on the same account) with Calendars enabled? If so, events in the calendars nested under iCloud should already be synced between the devices. (Technically, it's not exactly syncing; the calendars reside on iCloud, and the devices are clients reading and updating the events.)
Although not exactly step by step, the Apple support article "iCloud: Using iCloud Calendars with Calendar and iCal" at the following link should help you understand how the various types of calendars work:
