Q: Diffuculties with a Canon MF8450 and a MBP with OS X 10.9.2

Hi!

I'm having som problems with my printer, and is hoping for some help.

The printer is an Canon i-Sensys MF8450.

I have  the newest driver from Canon, 10.2.1, and through a USB-connection the printer workes fine.

However when trying to add the printer through the IP-adress, I cannot seem to make it work.

The printer is connecter to my wireless router, and I have tried both with a wireless connection and a wired one. I have tried both the IP-adress that the printer gives me, and the IP-adress of the router.

I also tried to connect to the printer directly via a ethernetcabel,  without any printout-success.

When the printer is added, throught the IP-adress, and I'm trying to print; the utility comes up and then the printer pauses. Also, I've been unsuccessfull so far with accessing the printer va Remote UI.

Does anybody have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Regards,

OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

If you have the printers IP address open Terminal applications/Utilities and at the prompt type: ping {printerIP}. You will get a reply or failure.

The two articles you refer to does not provide any help unfortunatly.

I've tried to reset the printing system without any luck.

    Hi!

The IJ Network Tool, version 4.3.0, does not find the printer. I have tried with both USB, the same cable I've been able to print with, and a LAN cable.

How do you know the printer's IP address?

I printed a info-page from the printer itself, where it states that the printers IP is 192.168.1.196.

That's not the address you pinged.

Attempting to connect to the MF via the Remote UI is a good start. If you cannot get this to work then you won't be able to add the printer.

You mention trying Ethernet and Wireless. Note that when you switch between either, you must enter Network Settings and select which connection you are using > Wired or Wireless. I suggest you try the Ethernet connection again with the connection between the MF and your router - not directly to your Mac. Then open the Network Settings on the MF and ensure that Wired is selected. Note that if you have to change from Wireless to Wired you will have to turn off the power for several seconds and turn back on for the change of setting to work.

With the power back on print the Network Config page again and check what IP address it has. By default this machine is set to DHCP so it should acquire an IP address from the router. With that information, enter that address as the URL in your web browser to see if you can connect to the MF's Remote UI page.

If that does not work then check that the MF, the router and your Mac are all using the same IP subnet. This is often going to be the first three sets of numbers in your IP address. So if you Mac and router are using 192.168.1.x, then the MF must also be using the same subnet.
